Chapter 16
What happened?
Knox let out a self–mocking laugh. “Mara’s gone, and I’ve been looking for her this whole time–can’t find her anywhere. The person who drove her away was Elena. Right under my nose, she was targeting Mara the whole time pressuring her not to come back and reconcile with me!”
His words shocked everyone. They never imagined Elena could be that kind of person.
But if Knox didn’t want to get divorced, why did he keep bringing up divorce every time, and insist that Mara had to beg until he was satisfied before he’d withdraw the application?
Everyone exchanged glances, all thinking the same thing, but Knox’s current state didn’t allow for much discussion. They could only offer some casual comfort.
In the end, Knox drank all the whiskey by himself. He stumbled down the street and took his assistant’s car back to
the villa.
The destruction from that day had been cleaned up, but the room was still as empty as ever–no sign of anyone else, no Mara. The room that had been torn apart over and over had long lost her warmth, and now you couldn’t even find a single strand of her hair.
Knox walked in and sat on the edge of the bed, remembering so many things.
From the first time he got angry and Mara started trying to please him, he’d become addicted to that feeling. Watching the person he loved rack her brains just to make him smile filled Knox’s heart with vanity.
demands became more and more excessive–he wanted to see just how far Mara would go for him, how er love really was.
though he told himself every time not to go too far, the moment he saw Mara, the darkness in his heart would e control. He wanted to see her kneel before him, wanted to see her jealous, wanted to see her risk her life for
him.
But now that Mara had escaped this ridiculous game, he realized how pathetic everything he’d done before really
was.
If he got another chance, he would never bring up divorce again.
Knox sat on the edge of the bed all night. The next day, his assistant approached him.
“Mr. Knox, it’s been three days. Miss Elena… if we don’t let her out soon, she’s not gonna make it.”
Reminded of this, Knox remembered that Elena was still locked in solitary confinement. Thinking of her, a flash of disgust crossed his eyes. If she hadn’t been stirring things up behind the scenes, how could Mara have been driven to

leave!
Knox stood up, his eyes completely cold.
“Let’s go check on her.”
They came to the solitary cell, and the moment the assistant opened the door, screaming erupted from inside.
“I was wrong, I know I was wrong!”
“Don’t lock me up, I know I was wrong, I know I was wrong!“”
“Ahhhhh!!”
Elena was curled up in the far corner, clutching her head. The solitary cell reeked, but she seemed oblivious to it, muttering constantly to herself.

After a long while, she noticed there seemed to be light in front of her. Elena looked up and saw the wide–open door and Knox standing outside. Like she’d grabbed a lifeline, she rushed over and hugged his legs, crying pitifully.
“Knox, I know I was wrong! I shouldn’t have threatened Mara. Please let me go, I really know I was wrong!”
She’d spent three days and nights in solitary confinement, but it felt more terrifying than all the previous
punishments combined. She cried and begged, her face covered in tears.
Looking at that face that had once been pretty and attractive, Knox felt only disgust. He kicked Elena away.
“I told you–until Mara comes back, your punishment won’t stop. Since you had the balls to pressure Mara into divorcing me back then, you should know today that all of this is exactly what you deserve.”
He said this without any emotion, making Elena stare at him in disbelief.
After confirming that Knox didn’t have an ounce of pity for her, she suddenly broke down completely.
She and Knox had been childhood friends, knowing each other since they were little. She’d loved Knox longer than anyone else. So why did she have to suffer like this because of Mara! Why was Knox looking at her that way!
Elena’s mouth twisted into a bitter smile, her eyes full of grief.
“Knox, do you really think this is all my fault?”
