Of course not–she simply couldn’t bring herself to ignore someone in need, even if they were a complete stranger. She would have helped anyone.
But after helping him, Mara didn’t want to lay eyes on him ever again.
So when it came to Knox’s questioning, she had no intention of explaining herself.
“We’re divorced, Knox. Whether I’m dating, in a relationship, or getting remarried–none of that’s your business. Don’t stay in my home any longer. You’re not welcome here.”
She opened the door as she spoke.
Knox’s heart ached even more. He’d imagined countless scenarios, but never once had he expected Mara to be this heartless, treating him like a complete stranger.
He stared at her intently, his voice filled with anguish.
“Mara, I know Elena made you angry before. I’ve already punished her for you, and I know I screwed up too. I never stopped loving you–never. Mara, come back with me, okay? I know you still love me, you’re just mad right now. I can wait for you. I can prove that every word I’m saying is true.”
“Mara, don’t throw me away. You loved me so much.”
If this had happened before, Knox talking to her like this would have left her over the moon. After all, throughout their marriage, she’d always been the one walking on eggshells around him. Even when she wanted a kiss, she’d have to beg him forever before he’d finally grace her with one.
Now he was finally dropping his act, done playing those stupid games–but it was too late.
Mara said nothing. She simply shoved him out the door and slammed it shut in his face.
Inside, Dylan watched Mara’s expression carefully. After confirming she showed no particular reaction, he smiled.
“So the soup really was for me, not a show for the ex–husband?”
Hearing his teasing tone, Mara laughed despite herself.
“I’m not that petty–using stuff like that to provoke people or hurt them. Love is love, and not loving is not loving. The soup is for you. You’ve helped me a lot.”
“Then I won’t hold back–I’m not leaving a single drop. It’s all mine.” Dylan chuckled softly, not mentioning what had just happened, as if Knox had been nothing more than a passerby who’d slept over and left in the morning.
He brought the finished soup to the table and ate it spoonful by spoonful. Dylan hadn’t been lying–he really didn’t

leave a drop, nearly licking the pot clean. Even the vegetables in it were eaten completely.
This attitude made Mara couldn’t help but compare him to Knox. In the past, no matter what she cooked for Knox, he’d only take one bite. No matter how much she pleaded, he’d never take a second, leaving her constantly wondering if her cooking wasn’t good enough.
But now, seeing someone treat her efforts with such care, Mara couldn’t help but smile.
Dylan was considerate–after finishing the soup, he washed the dishes himself and offered to drive Mara to the
studio.
She didn’t refuse, getting into Dylan’s car to head to work. When her colleagues saw them arrive together, they all exchanged knowing looks, but she didn’t bother explaining. She just took her seat.
Her mentor came over. “Mara, someone came looking for you yesterday. Seemed like they wanted you to design something. They left contact info–want to check it out?”
Mara nodded. Though the studio was on track now, everyone definitely wanted as many projects as possible, so even vague potential clients were worth considering.
Mara took the paper with the number her mentor had written down. After finishing her current tasks, she found a quiet spot to make the call.
The phone barely rang twice before someone picked up. Mara hadn’t expected such a quick response and hesitated for a moment before falling back on her professional manner.
“Hello, this is Mara from the studio. I understand you’re interested in having something designed?”
No response came from the other end. The silence stretched on, and just as Mara was about to speak again, a low, hoarse voice came through.
“Mara.”
