Chapter 22
On the day of their return home, Knox arranged for a private jet to pick up Mara. The two of them sat together on the plane in mutual silence.
Knox desperately wanted to talk to her, but after being treated with such coldness by Mara, he didn’t dare say much more, terrified of annoying her to the point where she’d refuse to come back.
This moment was exactly like that other time–Mara thought with bitter irony about how before their divorce, she and Knox had their roles reversed. Once, she had been the one walking on eggshells; now it was Knox’s turn.
She gave a self–mocking smile and ignored his gaze, closing her eyes to rest.
A few hours later, they landed domestically.
Knox had arranged everything well–as soon as they reached the terminal, someone came to pick them up. Their schedule was to go to the company during the day to coordinate business matters, with Mara representing the studio to discuss specific details with their design department.
At noon, they would eat at a restaurant near the company.
As for the evening, though Knox hadn’t said anything, Mara could guess that the nighttime was Knox’s real purpose.
She didn’t care. She went through the motions, arriving at the design department for coordination. The department head was extremely enthusiastic and very supportive of Mara’s concepts. The two of them talked for a long time, not finishing their discussion of the upcoming design plans until evening.
Knox waited nearby the entire time without showing any impatience. When he saw that Mara had finally finished her conversation, he walked over.
“Let’s go to the restaurant. Not eating on time is bad for your stomach.”
Seeing this, the department head suddenly thought of something. “Ms. Mara, you’re Mr. Peterson’s wife, aren’t you?”
Just as Knox was about to acknowledge this, Mara smiled and denied it.
“Ex–wife. Mr. Peterson and I divorced long ago.”
The department head felt awkward, and Knox’s expression darkened, but he held back and brought Mara to the restaurant he’d reserved.
This place was extremely difficult to book–you had to wait at least a month to get a table. Who knew what methods Knox had used. But Mara didn’t care. She sat down and seriously ate the food that was served, showing no interest in the beautiful scenery outside.
But Knox seemed to remember something from the past, the corners of his mouth turning up slightly.

“Mara, do you remember? You once said you wanted to eat at this restaurant. When we came here, you said what you loved most was the view from this place. I specifically reserved the best private room so you could see all of North Beijing.”
Mara didn’t even lift her head. “Yeah, and you only took one bite, said I was childish, and wanted to divorce me. I
remember that too, Knox.”
The atmosphere suddenly became stiff. Knox was silent for a while.
“Mara, I know you hate me right now. I promise I’ll never bring up divorce with you again, and I won’t let anyone
hurt you. Mara, please trust me one more time, okay?”
Outside, stars dotted the sky and the moon hung high–a rare and beautiful sight.
But when you don’t like something, you just don’t. Mara wouldn’t give herself another chance to be disappointed.
She finished her last bite, wiped the corners of her mouth, and stood up.
“If that’s all you wanted to say, then I’m heading back.”
Seeing her still cold attitude, Knox’s face went pale as he grabbed Mara’s wrist.
“I get it. Let me show you something, and after you see it, then you can decide whether you want to leave.”
Mara nodded.
She got into Knox’s car. Knox drove very fast, as if he couldn’t wait for something. He ran several red lights along the way, returning to the villa where they used to live.
Pushing open the door, he brought Mara to the second floor, first opening the door to what had been her room. The interior was completely restored to exactly how it had been when they weren’t yet divorced.
Mara looked around carefully but made no comments.
Knox then opened the deepest drawer and took out a familiar leather pouch. He opened it to reveal letters–all love etters. Randomly selecting one, Knox opened it and read it aloud, sentence by sentence.
These were his feelings hidden in the deepest places.
Mara didn’t tell him that she’d already seen them long ago.
She remained unmoved, listening as Knox read through all the love letters from all these years. The man’s eyes reddened, his fingers trembling.
‘Mara, do you believe me now? I truly love you. I was wrong before–please give me a chance to make it up to you, >kay?”
Mara looked at him and suddenly spoke.
