Chapter 23
Without a word, Knox dropped to his knees.
The thud echoed as his knees hit the floor hard. He looked up at Mara with hopeful expectation.
Mara let out a bitter laugh and turned to leave.
“But I’m not the kind of person who gets satisfaction from hurting others, Knox. When I say I don’t love you anymore, I mean it.”
She walked away without looking back, shattering Knox’s newly risen hopes.
‘Mara!”
He didn’t care about his image anymore, scrambling to his feet to grab her wrist.
‘Don’t go, don’t go. There’s one more thing–just look at one more thing…”
He was begging, his voice breaking with tears. No one would believe this was actually Knox Peterson.
Mara said nothing but didn’t leave either, continuing to follow Knox.
They went to the third floor, where no one lived–only a solitary confinement room.
Mara’s expression grew increasingly puzzled, but Knox didn’t hesitate, directing his assistant.
Open the door. Get her out.”
oon, Mara understood what Knox meant.
he person locked in the confinement room was actually Elena! And her mental state was clearly deteriorated. everal bodyguards dragged her out of the room, and suddenly exposed to light, Elena screamed and covered her
ace.
When she saw Mara outside, she crawled over like a madwoman and grabbed at her legs, breaking down in tears.
Mara, it’s you, it’s you! I was wrong before, so wrong! Knox never liked me–he’s always loved you. I was wrong, I houldn’t have slandered you. It’s all my fault!”
he spoke while kowtowing on the ground, abandoning all dignity and pride, nothing like her former glamorous elf. Elena now was clearly a broken woman.
I wasn’t hard to imagine what methods Knox had used to drive Elena to this state.
Mara felt no satisfaction from this revenge–only fear.

But Knox was delighted. He’d kept Elena here all this time for exactly this day, to make her personally apologize to
Mara.
He smiled. “Mara, are you happy?”
Mara’s gaze moved from him to the trembling Elena.
“Let Elena go.”
At these words, Knox’s expression immediately became bewildered. He didn’t understand why Mara wasn’t
pleased. Elena had been bullying her all this time–didn’t she want revenge? Didn’t she want to see her miserable state? Knox had carefully prepared for so long, thinking this would make Mara change her mind.
But she still showed no reaction, as if none of this had anything to do with her anymore.
His heart trembled, suddenly not knowing what to do, what else he could possibly do to win Mara back.
He was frantic, grabbing Mara’s hand.
“Why? Don’t you want to get back at her? I’ve already punished her for you. Mara, please just look at me, okay?”
He was about to cry. He’d found her, she was right in front of him, but Knox felt like he couldn’t hold onto Mara–she was somewhere far away from him.
He couldn’t understand it at all..
But Mara laughed, her eyes filled with pity.
“In your mind, was Elena the only one who hurt me?”
Knox opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, Mara spoke coldly.
“No, Knox. All along, the one who hurt me was you.”
The man’s face went pale. He wanted to explain, but Mara continued calmly.
“To satisfy yourself, you brought up divorce so many times, just to force me to beg you. Back then, to keep you from divorcing me, I gave up all my dignity, even risked my life. I gave you everything I had, and you? You just enjoyed it all. Knox, you were always the one hurting me. I only decided to leave after I realized this was how you expressed your love.”
He was speechless, only his eyes reddening.
Mara walked away once again, right in front of him, but he no longer knew what reason he could use to make her
stay.
In that moment, he finally understood–from the moment he decided to test her with divorce, it was already over between him and Mara.

As she passed by him, he suddenly broke into tears.
“Mara, you used to say you wanted to be with me forever, never to be apart.”
Mara didn’t turn back, didn’t even pause, her voice drifting lightly on the wind.
“You were the first to leave.”
