Chapter 5
Mara stumbled back to her room and collapsed on the bed, burying her face deep in the covers.
She thought she was all cried out, but tears still silently soaked the pillow. She curled up like a shrimp, even breathing hurt.
She lay there in a daze for the whole day. It wasn’t until the next day that she finally dragged herself up and mechanically ate something.
Her phone suddenly buzzed–a message from her college group chat:
[Tonight 7 PM. The Ritz–Carlton Boston reunion, everyone who can make it should come!]
She stared at the screen blankly. She was leaving soon anyway, and she’d probably never see these classmates again… might as well say goodbye.
The Ritz–Carlton was blazing with lights. Mara put on light makeup to cover her swollen eyes and picked out the simplest white dress she had.
‘Mara!” Her college roommate Amy waved her over. “Over here!”
A few old classmates sat around the table, all talking at once asking about her life.
Amy winked at her: “You chased that campus heartthrob Knox so hard back in the day–did you ever catch him?”
The other classmates all looked over curiously.
Mara’s fingers paused slightly. Back then she’d chased Knox with such fanfare that the whole school knew, but Knox only agreed to be with her after graduation, so hardly anyone knew they’d gotten together. Not to mention Knox hought weddings were a hassle and didn’t even have a ceremony.
‘Nope, never caught him.” She said quietly, forcing a faint smile.
f she could do it over, she’d rather have never met Knox at all.
‘Oh my God! He wouldn’t even go for a total knockout like you?” The classmates gasped. “Knox’s standards are way
oo high!”
‘Don’t be sad, I’ve got some quality guys here,” Amy pulled out her phone. “I’ll set you up!”
‘Set up what?”
A low, cold voice came from behind.
Mara’s whole body trembled. She turned to see Knox standing not far away with Elena. He wore an impeccably

ailored black suit, the diamond pin on his tie sparkling under the lights.
‘Knox?!” The classmates were stunned.
Elena was holding Knox’s arm, stunning in a red dress. The moment they appeared, they became the center of
attention.
‘Is this your… girlfriend?” someone asked carefully.
Elena shyly lowered her head. Knox didn’t deny it.
mmediately the room erupted with cheers. “Of course the campus heartthrob gets the gorgeous girl–they’re perfect ogether!”
Mara kept her head down drinking water, pretending not to hear..
Knox’s gaze stayed fixed on her like a blade.
The atmosphere in the private room heated up again. Someone suggested playing Truth or Dare, After the bottle spun a few times, it landed squarely on Elena.
“I pick Dare!” Elena said sweetly, but her eyes drifted toward Knox.
“Kiss one of the guys here for ten seconds!”
The moment the dare was announced, the room exploded with cheers.
Elena blushed, fidgeting with her dress, but walked straight toward Knox without hesitation.
Knox lounged lazily on the sofa, but his gaze cut through the crowd to land on Mara in the corner. She was looking down at her phone, completely unbothered by the scene.
Knox’s expression turned ice–cold.
“Knox…” Elena was already standing in front of him, shyly biting her lip.
Under everyone’s gaze, Knox suddenly grabbed the back of Elena’s head and kissed her hard.
“Wooooo-”
The screams nearly blew the roof off.
The kiss lasted way longer than the required ten seconds. Knox even deliberately made wet, suggestive sounds.
Mara finally looked up, but just glanced over calmly before going back to scrolling her phone.
Knox’s face got even darker.
