Chapter 439
Chloe had always been thoughtful. She helped adjust the incline of Anathea’s bed with practiced ease despite her young age and even poured her a cup of water.
“When Mommy was sick and in the hospital before, I took care of her like this too.”
Her eyes curved into two little crescents as she smiled.
Because of filming, Hannah often worked late nights and ate very little to maintain her figure. On top of that, she trained intensely for action scenes, which eventually wore her body down in the end, she was sent to the hospital several times.
She couldn’t rely on her elderly grandparents, and there was no way to let her leech of a father know about her condition. So, the only person she could count on was Chloe.
Chloe had started caring for Hannah from a very young age.
Anathea looked at Chloe’s face, which carried a maturity beyond her years. She reached out and hugged her. “Thank you, Chloe. You’re such an angel.”
To be honest, Anathea hadn’t supported Hannah’s decision to keep the baby at first. Hannah’s pregnancy symptoms were far worse than when Anathea was pregnant with Xander. But despite that, Hannah had persevered.
Now, Anathea finally understood why Hannah had insisted on keeping the baby.
To Hannah, having a family was almost like having none at all. Chloe was the only blood relative she had in this world that she could count on–her sole comfort.
Anathea gently stroked Chloe’s cheek.
Chloe looked back at Anathea. Suddenly, she said, “Thea, your eyes look like someone else’s. I know him.”
“Really?” Anathea smiled, taking it as just a child’s passing words, and didn’t give it much thought.
“Really.” Chloe nodded. “He’s really tall and handsome. I kind of like him.”
Although Hannah didn’t really feel the same way. But Chloe kept that thought to herself.
Soon after, Hannah walked in carrying a takeout box from Hale Eatery. “Here, eat it while it’s hot.”
Anathea took the box of ravioli but only managed a small bite. The familiar taste immediately told her who made it. Her hand holding the spoon paused mid–air.
Hannah glanced at her and asked tentatively, “What’s wrong? Doesn’t it taste good?”
Anathea said nothing. She just placed the box back on the table. “I’m tired. I want to rest for a while.”
“Alright, rest well. Call me if you need anything.” Hannah carefully covered her with a blanket, Seeing that Anathe
closed and her breathing had evened out, she turned and left.
Just outside the ward, she saw a tall figure standing guard.
Gregory glanced sideways at Hannah, eyes flickering with hope.

But Hannah shook her head and sighed softly. “She only took one bite and then stopped. I think she realized it was your cooking.
Gregory lowered his eyes, feeling disappointed.
Watching his downcast state, Hannah exhaled and finally said what she had been holding in her heart all along.
“Gregory, some things just can’t be forced. I know what you did was to protect her. But you won’t let her contact the outside world and won’t let her leave. Do you really think you can keep her forever like this?

“You think you’re protecting her by keeping her inside your circle. But have you ever thought that your protection circle is just a prison for Thea?”
Gregory’s fingers clenched tightly.
Hannah continued, “Sometimes when fate runs its course, there’s nothing you can do to change it. Forcing something won’t make it work. The outcome will only leave a bitter taste.”
“So what if it’s bitter?”
The veins on Gregory’s hand bulged as his eyes darkened with turmoil.
Hannah was taken aback.
Because his voice held a near–obsessive edge as he said, “A bitter outcome is still an outcome. No matter how bitter it is, I’ll grit my teeth and swallow it.”
