Chapter 16
Logan
When I left my conversation with the other Alphas, I saw that Emily was in the middle of a confrontation with some of the other ladies. Among them was Eric’s wife, Pam.
I had no doubt she would try to stir up trouble the same way Eric did.
As I approached, prepared to interrupt their conversation, Emily had grabbed Pam by the collar. Her anger radiated off her, and I felt it from at least ten feet away.
Instead of stepping in, I let her handle it for a little while. And I admired her work.
I had never expected her to handle herself so well.
I don’t need some quiet little Luna that keeps to herself. I needed a woman who could keep up with me. Sometimes, I had my doubts that Emily could handle her side of the bargain.
This moment showed me a side of her that I had not expected.
She was a lot more than a pretty face to bolster my reputation. There were layers to Emily I hadn’t predicted. She was more wonderful than I expected. At this point, she was perfect for
- me.
When I stepped in, it was only to encourage Emily to continue down the path she wanted. I had no intention of stopping her.
Seeing his wife practically on the ground also had Eric racing across the room. If need to be, I would have stopped him.
His wife offended my bride. I would let her take her revenge.
However, she did not have the chance. From upstairs, the balcony that wrapped all the way around the room, came
came my father’s voice.
The banquet fell quiet. No one dared to speak over the Alpha.

“That’s enough! Logan, bring your fiancée to me. We must have a conversation.”
Emily immediately came to my side, and she looked up at me. I took her hand and led her to the stairs. The entire room watched us.
Neither of us looked back.
The silence we left behind was incredible. As soon as we disappeared, the whispering started. The further up the stairs we went, the louder it all became.
We went up to the second floor, where there were private rooms.
My father waited for us.
Emily seemed to shrink beside me, but she had no reason to. I squeezed her hand to let her know I had everything under control before we stood at the center of the room.
“Greetings, Alpha,” she said with a small bow of her head. My father didn’t pay any
attention to her.
“Wherever you two go, there is chaos,” said my father. His back was turned to us as he looked over the edge of the balcony, his hands behind his back. He watched as the banquet hall slowly went back to normal.
Many of the conversations down there would be about us. To my father, it was a weakness to be in the latest gossip. And that was all Emily and I had done.
He didn’t realize that I was using that to my advantage. It was something that he would
never even think of.
My rise to power was going to be different than his. He had never become Alpha King, and he was from a different age. He didn’t realize what a powerful weapon the media could be.
Right now, Emily and I were the all the packs could talk about. Soon, I was going to spin it to our advantage. It was just a matter of time.
“This is not the kind of atmosphere befitting of my heir.” My father left the balcony and

came into the room, standing before us.
His health was failing, and some of the color had drained from his face. He had probably come up here to get away from the crowd and rest. We were no more than an unwelcome
interruption.
Still, he stood as tall and strong as he was able to manage.
This man was once one of the strongest of the Alphas. If he were interested, he easily would have been Alpha King. Instead, he turned his focus to material things.
Image was a part of it.
“Logan, I have allowed this to go on for too long. You will find a new fiancée, and this time, you will need my approval first.”
“Absolutely not,” I answered quickly. Emily’s gaze snapped to me, but I kept my eyes on my
father.
I have come to find myself growing more attached to Emily. More than I would admit out loud. She was the perfect person to help me.
My father sneered at me, at us. It was the first time I had outright refused him.
“This is not a request,” he told me.
“Neither is my answer.”
“Emily will have excellent compensation for this entire situation. I’m sure she understands that a wolf in dormancy cannot be accepted as Luna,” said my father, his voice raising.
Emily was about to speak, but this was something I wanted to handle. She didn’t need to get mixed up in the small worldview of my father. We had much larger plans.
“No compensation will make up for the loss of my bride. You must understand that I will accept no other woman as my Luna,” I told him sternly.
“You will never become Alpha or King with her at your side.”

“Respectfully, Father, you do not know Emily. She is an excellent bride, and she will make an excellent Luna.”
“There is no way that can be true. A dormant wolf will only weaken you and your wolf. You need to think of how this will look to others, but also what it will do to you.”
“I am, Father. I assure you, this is the best route for me and the pack.”
“I can hardly see that happening.”
“Then I will find a way to prove it to you.”
Both of his eyebrows raised. I’d caught his attention.
“How will you do that?”
“Give me one week. In one week, I will show you all that Emily is capable of.”
My father sighed, his eyes going between me and Emily. “Very well.”
“Thank you,” I said, bowing my head. Beside me, I saw that Emily was doing the same.
With a wave of his hand, he excused us. We left the room, and I shut the door behind us.
“Why didn’t you take the deal?” Emily asked.
“Why would I?”
“Your father threatened to drop you as his heir. That is the last thing we are trying to accomplish here. If I’m an obstacle to you, that would have been the best time for you to
lose me.”
“Lose you? We have a deal. Are you looking to get out of it already?”
“That’s not exactly it. For you, the safest option is to find someone who isn’t like me.‘
“Emily, I have never once in my life chosen the safe option.”
“But this is too great a risk. This was your greatest opportunity to find another bride. It

might have been your last.”
I stopped in my tracks on the steps, forcing Emily to stop too. She was two steps behind me, and we were eye to eye.
I don’t think she realized how offensive all of this was to me. I had never been the type to let anything slide, and that included my own father looking down on me and my relationships.
The last thing I would do was break a contract because something was a little risky.
“Is this the kind of man you think I am?”
