Chapter 9: An Act of Goodwill

In the modeling world, new talent keeps popping up, and there are plenty of people with both talent and connections.

As a semi-newcomer who’d been in the industry just over two years, my resume wasn’t impressive, and I didn’t have any big-name background, so I got rejected a lot.

Then one day, my agent came to me with a big smile, saying someone had recommended me and told me to get ready for an interview for a luxury brand’s ad shoot. I was super surprised and happy, and I really valued this chance.

Luckily, the brand’s style fit me really well. After the shoot, the chief manager even kept my contact info, hoping to work with me again later.

When it was over, my agent asked me to go backstage to thank the person who’d recommended me. But when I opened the door, I saw the whole room was empty except for this guy sitting on a leather sofa with his eyes closed. It was Eric.

I felt a wave of annoyance as I thought. “Of course, who else in this industry had the clout to speak up and help me?”

But I always kept work and personal stuff separate, so I thanked him with a calm face.

Unexpectedly, he suddenly blurted out. “She told me everything.” Before I could figure out what he meant, he added, “Your agent is good to you.”

After he finished talking, it finally clicked for me.

When I was new to the industry, I did tell my agent, Bella Jimeason, why I wanted to get into it. “I want to make a name for myself for my boyfriend!”

Back then, I had been all lovey-dovey and made that bold statement. He must have heard it from her, because that ex- plained the look on his face then.

He stepped forward and took my hand, letting out a sound like a sigh.

“Why didn’t I realize how stubborn you

are!

“If you’d just bowed your head once, I could’ve sent you straight to the stage you wanted. Didn’t you always envy those supermodels? They shine abroad, making names for themselves at fashion weeks around the world. If you want it, I can still make you a rising star.”

Talk about a capitalist-if I hadn’t stayed cool, I might’ve been tempted.

“Did you forget about your standing?” I pried his fingers off one by one, watching his expression freeze and then slowly get darker. “Don’t forget, we’re done-ex-boyfriend.”

“Then, who are you referring to? That foreign kid from the other day?” His jaw tensed, and his face looked like he wanted to tear me apart.

I frowned. “I don’t need to explain that to you, do I?”

I left without looking back.

The moment the door closed, I heard the sound of things smashing inside.
