Chapter 5 Divorce
“Does it matter to you who he is?
“Oh, now you remember who I am?”
I looked at Wyatt coolly. His eyes flickered, and his grip tightened as he pulled Ezra into his arms, letting out a mocking laugh. “How would I know who you are?
“Quit stalling. Don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet at the last minute.”
Even though I’d let go, seeing the cold indifference in his eyes still sent a sharp pain through my chest.
I’d spent over 30 years taking care of this man, and now he took pleasure in my suffering and disappointment.
Damian, Laurel, and Maisy all wore the same indifferent expressions.
Seeing them like this, I clenched my fists, steeling myself, then turned and walked into the courthouse.
“Who’s filing?”
The clerk looked at our group in surprise.
stepped forward, plastering on smiles.
“My parents are getting divorced.”
and Laurel quickly
As expected, the clerk began the usual routine, trying to talk us out of it. “Sir, ma’am, you’ve spent a lifetime together. Is there really nothing you can work out?

Wyatt crossed his arms, smug. “I want to marry my new bride. Can you help me with that, miss?”
The clerk was momentarily speechless, and Wyatt shot me a triumphant look. “Say something. What, are you scared now?”
“Yeah, Mom, you can’t back out now. You know what’ll happen if you upset Dad,” Damian chimed in.
Laurel couldn’t resist adding, “Nicole, once the divorce is final, you need
to move out.
“There are only three bedrooms and a living room. There’s no way we can all fit.
“Cody and Faye want their own rooms, you know. You’re not getting any younger–why are you still taking up space?
“So shameless.”
Even though her last words were barely more than a whisper, I heard every syllable
Suddenly, I laughed–laughed at my own foolishness. I’d poured my heart and soul into raising our children, worked myself to the bone just to keep Wyatt alive, and in the end, this was their plan–to kick me out with nothing.
Damian stayed silent, letting Laurel speak for him.
He didn’t want to be the bad guy, but he had no problem reaping the benefits.
It was obvious Laurel had her sights set on the house, but didn’t want to take on the burden of caring for their father.

All these years, Wyatt and I never told the kids how much money we had.
Neither Damian nor Maisy had ever contributed a dime to Wyatt’s hospital bills.
)
After watching me support him for so long, Damian and Maisy must think we still have plenty of savings.
My 15,000 in life savings–none of them knew about it.
And as for the house, I was definitely taking half.
Looking at Damian and Laurel’s smug faces, I felt a surge of coldness- and a trace of irony.
Wyatt had just come out of a coma. They had no idea how grueling the care ahead would be.
Maisy had ignored us for years, but the minute she heard about the divorce and splitting assets, she came running home.
With a family this cold and selfish, did they really think they’d take good care of Wyatt?
And Ezra–whether she cared for him or just wanted his money, I could see right through her.
She’d seen the gold ring Wyatt wore when we got married and assumed he was a wealthy old man.
What she didn’t know was, that ring was the only thing of value he had left.
“Divorce? Why not?”
My voice was calm as I spoke. Wyatt’s face froze for a second, and just as he was about to say something, a voice sounded behind me, “Any
