I lost my parents young and was raised by my grandpa. He was an old–money tycoon, always emphasizing rules, while I had a young man’s mindset. We constantly argued. In a fit of anger, I threatened to leave home, saying I’d make a big name for myself, and I truly never went back.
Three years ago, Valentina hit someone with her car and cried, begging me to take the fall.
Worried about her and the child, I went to my grandpa that night and knelt before him, pleading with him to look after Valentina for those three years.
Grandpa said he would, but only if I made a bet with him.
I said Valentina loved me and would surely take good care of our family and child, waiting for my return.
Grandpa, however, said I was mistaken about her. If Valentina had a new partner the day I got out, then I would lose and have to come home to inherit the family business.
Today, I lost, and I accepted it wholeheartedly.
The top figures from the Emerald City’s government, military, and business sectors stood before me, engaging in a routine exchange of pleasantries.
Valentina pressed her rapidly beating heart and spoke to me stiffly.
“Jaxson, who exactly are you?”
I rolled my eyes.
“I’m Mr. Sterling’s grandson, and I’m the man pulling the strings behind Mayor Thompson and Director Miller’s rise to power.”
“Oh, and of course, I’m your ex–husband, Valentina. I’ve been curious ever since, how did you and Victor get married? If I’m not mistaken, we’re still legally married.”
Valentina’s face turned ashen white. She opened her mouth several times before finally managing to speak.
“That time… I visited you.”
I nodded, instantly understanding.
I’d been in prison for three years, and Valentina had only visited once.
