gift?”
From high school sweethearts to a wedding, seven years in all. I had endured this for
seven years.
At that moment, I finally let go completely,
breathing a sigh of relief.
“You fucking bitch!”
Dubois, completely enraged, abandoned all
pretense of composure. His eyes bloodshot,
he raised his hand to slap me across the face
like a madman.
I’m close to six feet tall, after all. I grabbed
his flailing right hand in both of mine, saying
each word distinctly. “Don’t you ever lay a
hand on me. Just sign the damn papers.

He gritted his teeth, his eyes filled with fury.
“Why? I told you that you misunderstood.
Why won’t you listen to my explanation?”
I scoffed, yanking my hand away. “I don’t
want to hear your excuses. I have eyes. I saw
everything. Are you trying to justify your
behavior?”
“If you’re willing to do that in front of all
these people, how much more is going on
when I’m not around?”
“You always threatened me with divorce
anyway, just so you could be with her. So go
ahead. I’ll do you a favor and make it
happen.”
A barrage of insults from Dubois’s crew erupted around me.
I pretended not to hear, pointing to the divorce papers on the table.
Dubois was breathing heavily, his chest
heaving. He clenched his fists, glaring at me,
then sneered.
“Fine, let’s get a divorce. I’ll sign this! You’ll
regret this, Yates!”
With that, he snatched the pen from the table
and scribbled his name on the divorce
agreement, not even bothering to read the
contents.
I was overjoyed. This divorce agreement was
the most beneficial for me, but also the most
difficult to achieve.
Dubois and I had a prenuptial agreement,
which meant that we didn’t have much joint
property after the marriage. His family
insisted on it when we got married to prevent
me from getting my hands on Dubois
Corporation.
The lawyer originally wanted me to use the
divorce agreement and evidence to negotiate
with Dubois.
