“How dare this kind of guy compete with you for a woman? He clearly doesn’t know his place.”
Shane shook his head in disbelief.
Everyone could see how ordinary Harold looked. He would never be able to provide for someone like Yvonne, who’d been pampered her whole life.
“If the Jamison family hadn’t gone bankrupt, a guy like him would never have even had a chance to meet Yvonne in his entire life.”
Everyone in the room was passing judgment on Harold. Each word added to Jared’s confidence.
At first, he’d been bothered by the thought of Yvonne’s blind date, but now that he knew it had been forced on her and Harold was no match for him, his doubts faded away.
“So, don’t keep bringing up the fact that Yvvy was forced into that date. I don’t mind, and I don’t want to pressure her. I have my own ways to make up with her.“/ Just then, Anthony kindly reminded, “But Jared, have you figured out the reason behind your fight with Yvonne?”
“What reason? It’s just the seven–year itch. That’s all.”
Jared narrowed his eyes, his vision hazy from the smoke. Then he continued, “We’ve never been apart for long. Right now, Yvvy’s the one suffering. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. You’ll see. I’ll win her back soon enough.”
Everyone agreed that Jared had the confidence to say such a thing.
He and Yvonne had been inseparable childhood sweethearts. It was normal for them to fight, break up, and make up.
When Jared went to Yvonne’s house to apologize, she must’ve definitely been swept off her feet.
“Yvonne’s been saying she wants to marry you for ages. There’s no way you’ll be able to escape from her!”
“Women are emotional, Jared. Once they become used to being pampered, it’s hard to break the habit. Even with her family’s fall from grace, she won’t be able to resist the luxury of life with you. She’ll come back.”
“We’ll be waiting for your wedding, Jared!”
The party didn’t last until the early hours. It ended earlier than expected.
The nightlife of the bar street was lively and bustling. Jared and Anthony stood on the sidewalk, smoking.
“Shirley, come pick me up.”
Seeing Jared make the call, Anthony hesitated for a moment before saying, “Jared, Yvonne isn’t the type to act on impulse. If she’s upset, there’s a reason. Even if it’s just jealousy, you need to handle the situation carefully and keep a distance from other women.”
Anthony hadn’t forgotten how cold Yvonne had been when she’d refused to visit Jared in the hospital.
“You don’t believe me either?” Jared narrowed his eyes, displeased. “Yvvy’s being irrational. I haven’t cheated on her. All these years, she’s been the only girlfriend I’ve ever had. I’ve given her my full commitment and love.
“You know how I’m doing after returning to the Ford family. Given my status now, I could easily get any woman with a similar background.”
As he spoke, he almost seemed to feel that he’d sacrificed a lot for this relationship.
“I haven’t abandoned Yvvy. She’ll understand eventually. She already has everything. She’s throwing a tantrum now, and I’ll calm her down because she’s my girlfriend. But that doesn’t mean I’ve done anything wrong.”
Anthony looked at him, not saying a word.
“Shirley is just a student I’ve been sponsoring. I’m just keeping her around to be my secretary. If I fire her because Yvvy’s jealous, that wouldn’t be fair to Shirley. It would also make it look like I’ve actually done something wrong.”
Jared lazily stubbed out his cigarette.
Back in their college days, relationships had been simple—they either liked someone or they didn’t. But now, as adults, especially in Jeriton City’s elite circle, everyone’s status and background were part of the equation.
Jated was confident. He lightly tapped his watch with his finger.
“Yvvy’s smart. When she comes back, I’ll explain everything to her. Everything will be fine once she understands.”
Anthony lowered his gaze, hiding the unease in his eyes,
“Jared, if love has to be about status and position, then it’s not truly love anymore. As your friend, I’m just reminding you to cherish her. You need to remember that Yvonne chose you and not anyone else.”
