“Thank you, Professor Weedle,” Selena said, but her smile barely masked her condescension.
In comparison, the two friends beside her seemed to be mere accessories to Selena, lacking in all areas,
“Professor Weedle, we’ve all signed up for the Jeriton City Jewelry Design Competition. Given your authority in the industry, I’m sure you’ll be invited as a judge, right?”
Selena’s two friends were getting anxious. Their visit today was all about gaining favor with Jean.
“I haven’t received an invitation yet,” Jean replied without directly answering.
At that moment, Selena tactfully said, “I actually think it might be better if you don’t judge the competition. It’s like a competition without pre–selected, favored participants. There’s no comparison based on status, making it a fairer showcase of the contestants‘ work.”
In truth, Selena was eager to win first place in the competition.
Although she was an heiress of the Ford family, she didn’t want to be seen as just a socialite with no substance.
Winning would allow her to become Jean’s apprentice, and she would prove herself to be the most talented designer in the jewelry industry.
“Give it your best in the competition. I wish you all good luck.” Jean said. At the same time, an idea popped up in her mind.
A moment later, Selena and her friends left Jean’s home.
As Selena walked alone toward the northern gate of the neighborhood, she saw a familiar figure by the trash cans.
It was Yvonne, wearing an apron and sorting trash.
Because the leftover materials from the restoration were sharp, Yvonne was being extra careful, disposing of them so no one would get hurt.
“Yvonne? What are you doing here, dressed like that, sorting trash?” Selena’s voice rose, full of disbelief. She wrinkled her nose in disgust, clearly unwilling to get too close to the trash cans.
Yvonne couldn’t possibly be working as a maid here, could she?
When Yvonne turned around and saw Selena’s expression, she felt speechless. “What are you doing here?” she asked.
“I’m visiting someone,” Selena replied.
To her, Yvonne’s reluctance to answer seemed to stem from embarrassment.
“Didn’t you get a good breakup settlement from Jared?” she mocked.
Although Yvonne used to be Jared’s secretary and didn’t have much real skill, she shouldn’t have fallen this low. Becoming a maid for just 8,000 to 10,000 dollars a month was truly embarrassing.
Yvonne had no interest in engaging with Selena on this topic. “I’m busy. Bye now.

Watching Yvonne’s retreating figure, dressed so simply and looking so downcast, Selena couldn’t help but smirk. “How busy can one be doing housekeeping? You’re not an hourly maid, are you?”
The thought of it made Selena laugh more.
As she left the neighborhood, she got into her red sports car and dialed Jared’s number. “Jared, I ran into Yvonne. Do you know how miserable she is now?” “What happened to Yvvy?” Jared’s voice on the other end of the line sounded concerned.
“I saw her at the jewelry store. She couldn’t afford the pearls she really liked, and then I found her working as an hourly maid, sorting trash in a high–end neighborhood. It’s really pathetic. If she goes around saying she was your ex, it’ll embarrass our whole family.”
Upon hearing this, Jared felt a surge of anger. “Yvvy has lived a life of luxury by my side. How could she end up struggling like this after leaving me?”
He couldn’t understand why she was putting herself through this hardship.
She must be too proud and unwilling to swallow her pride, which was why she hadn’t come to find him even when she was struggling.
In his office, Jared lit a cigarette and made up his mind.
“Yvvy, I told you I didn’t want to pressure you, but knowing you’re suffering out there breaks my heart! I have to bring you back.”
