Laura wanted to explain, but the words caught in her throat.
Martha stared daggers at the sloppy, smirking housemaid.
This woman had once stolen gold bars and other valuables from their home–it took ages and no small effort to get her thrown in prison.
Back then, Martha was so focused on Laura’s heart condition, she never noticed how eerily alike the two looked.
It should’ve been obvious. One glance should’ve been enough. So why had it taken her this long to see the truth?
“Oh wow, Mrs. Harold, it’s you!” Becky’s eyes lit up with false delight.
“Be a dear and lend me some money, will you? After all, my daughter ended up being yours.
“You raise her, raise me—it’s all the same! I’d be happy to come back and work as your maid again!”
Martha shook with rage, her heart aching with sharp, dull pain.
Her real daughter had been swapped by this woman–and she never noticed.
She raised a thief’s daughter like her own!
Her vision swam. Her knees buckled. Everything went black as she collapsed to the floor.
It didn’t take long for Alexander to learn about Laura stealing Lynette’s clothes and copying her entire style.
He didn’t argue. He simply handed her a divorce agreement.
“Alexander, this isn’t fair! You married me willingly!”
Her voice cracked with hysteria.
“You think divorcing me will make Lynette come back? You don’t even know where she is!”
Alexander’s jaw clenched. A bitter laugh escaped his lips.
“Willingly?” You mean after all your scheming? You tricked me into mistaking you for her, and that mistake led me
to marry you.
“Laura, why are you acting like the victim? You made this mess.”
Laura shrieked, ripping the divorce papers in half, eyes wild with desperation.
“I’m not getting divorced! Alexander, you can’t do this to me!”

Just as Alexander opened his mouth to respond, his phone rang–it was his assistant.
“Mr. Allen, Laura’s ex–husband says he has something to tell you about her. He’s asking for a meeting.”
“Laura’s ex–husband–Jack Therry?” Alexander’s brows furrowed.
He remembered putting Jack behind bars for four years after the man beat Laura.
Judging by the timeline, his release was about due.
And sure enough, the second Laura saw Jack, her eyes filled with panic.
“You! What are you doing here?”
Jack let out a cold, mocking laugh. “If I weren’t here, how else would I let Mr. Allen know he’s been played?”

Laura’s heart pounded as panic gripped her. She lunged forward, grabbing Jack’s sleeve, trying to drag him away—but Alexander stepped in and blocked her.
“Played? What are you talking about?”
Jack looked straight at him, eyes filled with contempt.
“Mr. Allen, this woman is a liar through and through!
“Back when we were together, she said she loved me and wanted to build a life. I begged, borrowed, and scraped to- gether every cent I could to buy us a house. She said to give her the money; she’d handle it.
“Know what she did? She took every damn cent and vanished! Then she faked injuries and claimed I beat her!”
The more he spoke, the angrier he got. He pointed at Laura, shouting.
“We were married for a whole year, but she never even let me touch her–let alone abuse her!
“I did four years for that lie. Fine. But don’t let her fool you, too, Mr. Allen. You better open your damn eyes!”
Laura collapsed to the floor, completely shattered.
It was over. Everything was over!
She thought getting Jack locked up would be the end of it.
She never saw the paternity test coming. She never imagined Jack would track Alexander down!
She should’ve cleaned up her mess better, but now, it was too late.
No matter how desperately she scrambled for a way out, nothing could save her.
Alexander slapped her hard, the sound echoing through the room. She hit the ground, the sting on her cheek nothing compared to the fury in his eyes.
His heart felt like it was being crushed in a vise.

He’d been a pawn in her lies–and because of it, the woman he truly loved had suffered again and again.
How dare she?!
“Alex! It’s not what you think! I had no choice!”
Laura grabbed his leg, sobbing hysterically.
“I just loved you too much. I couldn’t let go!
“From the first time you came to my house, I loved you. I only copied Lynette because I felt so small, so unworthy. I…
“Please, just give me one more chance. We’re married!”
But Alexander kicked her off him without hesitation.
He didn’t spare her another glance. All he could think about was finding Lynette.
He had to make this right. He had to apologize. There was still time. If he could just explain, she would understand.
