His voice was gentle and caring, like he actually gave a damn about me.
I replied flatly: “Do whatever you want.”
He seemed satisfied: “Brooklyn, you’re being so reasonable about this. I’ll throw a party to announce this to everyone. That way, you and I will finally have a child together.”
I felt absolutely nothing inside.
I took Lucas’s urn and went to the ocean.
I scattered Lucas’s ashes into the sea. My Lucas, you’re free now. No more pain.
The sea breeze carried the salty air. I heard people nearby talking.
“Didn’t the Hawthornes say their younger son was only six months old? How are they having a recognition ceremony so soon?”
“Yeah, I heard that older kid is almost three.”
“Everyone knows about Damien and that Sienna chick. Only his actual wife is still clueless.”
“God, that’s just sad…”
I packed my bags and had my lawyer deliver the divorce papers to Damien.
At the recognition ceremony, guests were arriving, but Damien was on edge. Brooklyn was nowhere to be found.
Just as he was about to look for me, his assistant rushed over: “Mr. Hawthorne, we can’t find your wife anywhere!”
Damien’s stomach dropped.
That’s when Attorney Morrison arrived with a document: “Mr. Hawthorne, Ms. Hayes asked me to give you this–divorce papers.”
Damien looked like he’d been hit by lightning: “Divorce? NO FUCKING WAY!”
Attorney Morrison continued: “Ms. Hayes was dead serious about this. Before I came here, I saw her with Director
Richardson.”
James Richardson–Director of the National Medical Research Center, and one of tonight’s guests.
Damien immediately approached James.

James was straightforward, handing him a USB drive: “This is what Ms. Hayes gave me. Haven’t had a chance to look at it yet, but I had my assistant Sarah put together a presentation.”
Damien took the USB drive, his hands shaking slightly.
But Sienna clung to him, whining: “Damien, the party’s starting. This stupid drama can wait. Where’s some pathetic woman gonna run off to anyway? Don’t keep our guests waiting.”
Damien violently shook off her hand, the force making Sienna stumble backward. Ignoring her completely, he grabbed the USB drive and strode toward the large screen in the center of the banquet hall.
All he wanted to know was what the hell had happened to me, and why I wanted a divorce.
He plugged the USB drive into the computer.
James walked over with a slight smile: “Sarah, why don’t you walk everyone through this.”
Sarah stepped onto the stage and opened the PowerPoint presentation.
The first slide: intimate photos of Damien and Sienna–her straddling him on his office desk, passionate kisses in hotel hallways, his hands tangled in her hair. Absolutely revolting to witness.
The second slide: their text messages, plotting how to get me pregnant, how to turn Lucas into Noah’s personal “blood bank.”
The third slide: photos of Lucas in the ICU, getting weaker by the day.
The fourth slide: surveillance footage from multiple locations–Damien’s hand sliding down Sienna’s back at charity galas, stolen kisses in parking garages, her legs wrapped around his waist in his private elevator. Every frame was sickening.
