Chapter 4
“Not happening.”
“I don’t like you anymore, Kai.”
My reply was short and sweet.
I didn’t want to waste another word or ounce of energy on this.
Kai fell silent for a long time.
Like he couldn’t believe I’d answer so decisively.
Out of basic politeness, I reminded him coldly:
“International calls are expensive. One minute costs a month’s worth of groceries. Not worth it.”
Kai snapped back to reality.
His voice carried a tinge of jealousy.
“You don’t like me? So what, your heart only has room for Jaxon?”
“I make more money than him. I can talk on international calls as long as I damn well please.”
“Look, there’s been a misunderstanding between us. I need to clear things up over the phone…”
[ cut him off.
‘There’s nothing to talk about.”
‘I don’t like either of you anymore.”
‘Kai, you’re just a student now–how exactly are you making money?”
‘So you don’t go hungry for the next three months, I’m hanging up now.”
The sharp dial tone rang out.
Kai froze in place, his arm still holding the phone, unable to put it down.
This was the first time I’d ever mocked him.
He realized that somehow, our lives had diverged into different leagues.

I was working my way through college, earning in dollars.
While he’d chosen to donate his most valuable years–his youth–to Scarlett, for free.
Suddenly, he felt a pang of resentment.
Kai shook his head hard, trying to force down that strange thought.
After all, he’d been reborn to save Scarlett.
Talking about money–that was beneath a man’s dignity.
Seeing him standing there, unmoving.
Jaxon yanked open the phone booth door, frowning with urgent concern.
“How is she?”
“Did she cry and say she wants to come back?”
“Remember what we agreed on–we can let her come back, but she can’t interfere with us helping Scarlett.”
“Next round of college admissions, if Winter behaves herself, we can bring Scarlett along and all go to Harvard together…”
Kai’s hand holding the phone finally dropped to his side.
“She’s not coming back.”
[axon’s pupils filled with shock.
‘For real?”
“You heard her right? What was her tone like? Was she just talking out of anger?”
He desperately hoped Kai would give him a satisfying answer.
Something like, “She’s willing to come back, but only if we promise never to talk to Scarlett again.”
Or maybe, “She was really upset, said this is her first winter without a hot water bottle to keep her warm.”
But Kai shook his head, deflated.
‘She wasn’t angry.”
‘She was serious. She really doesn’t want to come back.”
A flash of panic crossed Jaxon’s eyes.

Chapter 4
“What do we do now?”
He couldn’t believe those words had come out of his own mouth.
Reborn for a second chance–wasn’t the whole point to make up for not being with Scarlett in his past life?
In that previous life, only one person he didn’t really love had died.
Jaxon hadn’t been that heartbroken about it originally.
But Scarlett had begged them to stay and help her with homework, saying if she couldn’t get into college, her father would marry her off to some drunk.
After she died, that memory haunted him like a ghost.
Even her not–so–charming smile appeared in countless dreams.
He felt so guilty.
So did Kai.
After enough times, they suddenly felt-
It was their failure to save her that led to Scarlett’s death.
So, all the love I’d received was stolen from Scarlett.
Thinking about it that way, it all made sense.
Jaxon realized he was losing his composure. His neck flushed red as he stiffened and said:
“Winter can come back or not, whatever.”
Right now, our priority is helping Scarlett improve her grades.”
Kai nodded in agreement.
“That’s what she says now.”
“But women, you know–they’re always throwing tantrums.”
“Once I swallow my pride this time, she’ll definitely regret not giving me a way to save face.”
“Give it two weeks, and she’ll be calling. We just gotta wait here by the payphone.”
