Chapter 92
As Yvonne lamented, she didn’t notice the concern that flashed briefly in Samuel’s eyes.
The two had walked quite a distance, and the overpass was now in sight.
The path ahead was muddy, and Yvonne walked carefully. Suddenly, the stone beneath her foot gave way.
She panicked, but before she could react, Samuel grabbed her arm Yet, she still twisted her ankle.
“I’m sorry. I should’ve warned you sooner. Did you hurt your foot? Samuel asked.
“I wasn’t paying attention. It’s just a sprain. I’m fine. I can still walk.”
Despite her words, the terrain was challenging. Yvonne gritted her teeth and tried to keep moving, but the pain in her ankle made it impossible to put any weight on it.
Frowning, Samuel stopped her. “Don’t push it. It’s just a sprain now, but if you keep walking on it, it could get worse. We’re close now. Let me carry you.”
Noticing her hesitation, he added with a smile, “You don’t want to stay here forever, do you? Let’s get out of here.”
“Okay, thank you,” Yvonne said, giving in. She didn’t want to risk making her injury worse and slowing him down even more.
Samuel discarded anything unnecessary and crouched down. Yvonne, still wrapped in his jacket, was glad she had worn pants and flat shoes that day.
As Samuel lifted her, his hands first brushed against her thigh. He was stunned for a moment. He adjusted to hold her by the back of her knee instead.
Meanwhile, Yvonne’s arms were wrapped around his neck. For a split second, the closeness caught her off guard. She stiffened.
When people felt awkward, they really would pretend to be busy. Her eyes darted around aimlessly until she spotted a piercing on Samuel’s ear.
So, he’d had a rebellious phase too.
Samuel could feel her breath close to his ear. Carrying her felt almost more intimate than a hug. It was as if their heartbeats
were in sync.
When they approached a muddy patch, Samuel abruptly stopped. He felt that a branch had scraped his calf.
“What happened?” Yvonne immediately sensed that something was off with him.
Samuel lowered his gaze. “It’s nothing. The ground’s full of rocks and debris. It’s a good thing you didn’t try walking on your own. That muddy water is filthy. It could easily cause an infection.
It wasn’t until he’d carried her all the way to another highway that they finally stopped somewhere safe.
But up ahead, there still wasn’t a single car in sight.
“This highway’s probably closed too,” Yvonne said.
“As long as we’re safe, that’s fine. I can get a signal here and call for help.”
Samuel felt a sting in his calf, but with his pants stained and soaked, the bleeding wasn’t obvious.
He took a deep breath, sat down nearby, and finally got through to one of his men on his phone.
“Let’s wait here. Help is on the way. We’re safe now.”
“That’s such a relief.”
Yvonne truly felt like she’d just survived a brush with death.

Meanwhile, as Jared left the self–serve gas station and entered the coll station via another highway, he noticed a heavy presence of traffic police in the area.
He listened to the chaotic sounds around him, and something important caught his ear.
There had been a mudslide on the stretch of highway he’d just driven on, and the entire road was now closed.
“Mudslide? Yvonne…“.
Without wasting any time, Jared grabbed his phone and checked the news.
“Jeriton City is facing the heaviest rainfall in 30 years. It has caused a mudslide on Section G60 of the Jeriton–Tidalus Highway.
The highway is closed, and rescue teams are searching for vehicles or people trapped.
“Surveillance footage shows two vehicles that haven’t cleared the area. The owners are currently unreachable.”
Jared’s eyes widened in shock.
That was Yvonne’s car. She was trapped on the highway that had been hit by a mudslide!
