At the end of the day, Lainey and Theodore were mother and son in name only.
Back when he controlled the Russell family and Russell Group, Lainey and her three children had to live under his thumb without a shred of dignity He eldest son even had his leg broken by him.
It wasn’t until Theodore’s car accident left him blind that they finally got a chance to turn things around. That was when Lainey secretly vowed to make game out of tormenting Theodore.
Everything had been going just as Lainey planned–until Eliana came into the picture.
Daniel said marrying Eliana to Theodore was to keep him from feeling too alone. But in truth, it meant Daniel still had hope for him, which was why he brought Eliana in to take care of him.
Under Lainey’s stare, Eliana started to feel uneasy and thought, ‘Does she think I’m deliberately siding with Theodore just to go against her?”
At that thought, Eliana quickly said, “Lainey, you wouldn’t believe it. Last night when I walked into Mr. Russell’s room, I was shocked by the food hed thrown all over the floor. Does he always do that?”
Lainey replied in a dismissive tone, “Theodore likes to throw things when he’s in a bad mood. You’ll get used to it.”
Eliana sighed, “But the smell was really awful. I don’t want to lose sleep every night because of his spilled, rotten food.”
She purposely made a disgusted face. “That’s why I want to add a window in the room. That way, if he throws food again, I can crack it open, get some air, and make myself feel better.”
Lainey didn’t fully believe her explanation, but her tone softened a little. “Fine. Do wha
you want.”
“Thank you, Lainey,” Eliana said sweetly, then lowered her head and went back to her breakfast.
After Eliana left for work, Lainey immediately called Wyatt over and gave him a few instructions.
She didn’t like Eliana’s vague attitude, and she had no patience to guess what someone like her was really thinking. So Lainey decided to lay out the choices directly–whether Eliana could pick the right one would depend on how smart she was.
In the evening, Eliana returned to Russell Manor with her freshly earned $3,000 paycheck.
She had only been working for two years and was still just a junior assistant in her department, but she believed that with hard work, promotions and raises weren’t just a dream.
Just then, a delicious smell wafted from the direction of the kitchen. Eliana swallowed and planned to head upstairs to take off her makeup before coming down for dinner.
But to her surprise, Wyatt was standing in front of Theodore’s room with a tray in hand.
The moment he saw her, he spoke up, “Mrs. Eliana Russell, Mrs. Lainey Russell said that starting today, it’s your responsibility to feed Mussell, give him his meds, help him bathe, and do his massages.”
Eliana thought, ‘What?‘ Her expression tightened. “But I’ve never learned how to take care of someone.”
“Mrs. Lainey Russell said you’re smart. It’s not too late to learn now,” Wyatt said flatly, offering the compliment without the slightest sincerity before shoving the tray into Eliana’s hands.
Chapter 5
Eliana looked down and saw that aside from a few pills, there was only a bowl of oatmeal and aide of stearned brászati
“Wyatt,” she asked in disbelief, “that’s all Mr. Russell’s getting?”
Wyatt’s expression didn’t change, “Mrs. Lainey Russell said that since Mr. Russell flipped over the carefully prepared dinner last night, a must no suited his taste. So now it’s been replaced with something lighter.”
Eliana pondered, ‘That’s just a flat–out lie. The food last night was clearly spoiled. From the looks of it, the relationship between Theodore and Camerie even more complicated than I thought. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be cutting back on his meals like this!
