Chapter 10
Knox had just returned to the hospital when he heard Elena’s voice.
“Miss, is that guy who’s been taking care of you your boyfriend? He’s so sweet to you.”
“Oh, not really–Knox has always been like this with me.”
Elena giggled coyly, basically confirming the boyfriend comment. Knox had heard this kind of thing before. He knew about Elena’s little schemes, but it would never happen. He would only ever love Mara, and even if they divorced a hundred times, they’d remarry each time.
By now, Mara should be happily withdrawing that divorce application.
Thinking of her face, Knox’s lips curved into a smile as he walked into the hospital room. Elena saw him and immediately blushed bright red.
“Knox, you actually came! What about Mara? If you don’t go to her, won’t you actually end up divorced?”
Hearing her clumsy manipulation, Knox almost wanted to laugh. How could he not see through her schemes? She
just wanted to climb the social ladder. If she wasn’t useful for getting under Mara’s skin, Knox wouldn’t spare her a glance.
Now that the divorce application was withdrawn, he’d had his fun these past few days. His attitude toward Elena cooled as he brushed her off casually.
“Already withdrew it. I’m not divorcing Mara.”
Sure enough, Elena’s expression shifted–from shock to resentment, then finally to a forced nod.
“Oh, I see. Mara probably begged you shamelessly again, right? Knox, you’re perfect in every way–just too
soft–hearted.”
Knox chuckled softly, not bothering to call out her words.
He glanced around. Elena had basically recovered already. Rather than babysitting her, he was more eager to see Mara’s happy expression. Before, whenever he agreed to withdraw the application, Mara would cook a huge feast to please him. That careful yet unguarded love always captivated Knox over and over.
‘I’m heading home. You can handle the hospital yourself.” He turned to leave.
No gentle hand–feeding, no heart–fluttering intimate moments–Knox’s cold tone made Elena panic instantly.
She forgot all about using her injury as an excuse and scrambled out of bed.
“Knox!”

Chapter 10
Knox turned back, his probing gaze sweeping over her.
Elena felt the embarrassment of being seen through, but how could that be? Knox liked her so much. She collected herself and forced a light laugh.
“I’ll come back with you. I want to check on Mara anyway.”
Another pathetic excuse. Knox didn’t want to agree–he hadn’t had alone time with Mara in ages. He missed the feel of her soft body in his arms, missed those pure yet cautious doe eyes. But since he’d just agreed to withdraw the application today, he couldn’t let her get too comfortable.
He’d just find some excuse to get rid of Elena later.
With that thought, Knox let Elena follow behind him.
He reached the underground garage and headed straight for his car, ignoring Elena’s little jog to keep up. She immediately yanked open the passenger door.
“Knox, why are you in such a rush today?” she panted, complaining.
“Get out,” Knox said suddenly.
“What?” Elena froze, not understanding.
“Get out. Sit in the back,” Knox clarified with a frown.
Today he didn’t want Elena sitting in Mara’s spot.
“Why? I always sit here, Knox…” Elena said pitifully, but before she could finish, Knox cut her off.
“Either sit in back or get out of the car.”
Feeling Knox’s non–negotiable tone, Elena held out for a moment, realized there was no room for argument, then reluctantly climbed out of the passenger seat and sulked into the back.
The next second, Knox hit the gas and tore out of there.
Just thinking about how Mara must be waiting obediently for him in the living room right now, Knox couldn’t control his emotions.
He ran God knows how many red lights, racing recklessly through traffic until he finally reached the intersection before their villa.
Then he stopped and regained his composure, only the slight curve of his lips giving him away.
