Chapter 4

A fierce gust of wind struck, sending Sharon tumbling to the ground

The next second, I fell into an icecold embrace, involuntarily

shivering

This familiar sense of dread felt like being coiled by a python

I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination, but the person holding me seemed to be trembling slightly too

Christopher Harrington’s voice came from above my head, seething with rage: Didn’t you refuse to stay here? Why did you come back? I told you if I ever saw you again, I’d never let you go!”

I weakly opened my mouth, wanting to say something, but only

blood came out

I was dying

I used to fear being caught by Christopher, but now I no longer found him terrifying his cold body even felt oddly comforting

I thought Christopher would be happy that I was dying, but he

wasn’t

His eyes blazed red as he grabbed my throat and shook me: Answer me! Answer me!”

My throat burned with pain, feeling like I’d stop breathing any second

Yet I wasn’t afraidI had no attachment left to this world

That Christmas when I was sent to the church, after smashing the statue and fleeing with the offerings to escape marriage, I discovered my body had stopped aging. Like a monster, I lived

from World War I through to this peaceful era

By now, I couldn’t even remember how many years I’d been alive

I wasn’t sure if it was a dying hallucination, but I felt warmth flowing from Christopher’s body

I could only close my eyes and play dead

But I felt that warmth growing stronger

The townspeople outside didn’t dare enter, all afraid that seeing the deity would make them sacrificial offerings

Only Sharon boldly steadied herself against the wall and rushed

back in

The moment she saw Christopher, she froze, her expression turning shy

You’re the deity?she asked in disbelief

He was beautiful, but he wasn’t human after all

His body was cold and hard, completely unsuited for ordinary life

I thought longterm, but Sharon was clearly shallow

She’d always assumed the deity was some terrifying monster, never expecting a handsome man

She figured if the deity wasn’t a monster, maybe marrying him

wouldn’t be so bad

Sharon coyly approached us: Lord Deity, I’m actually your bride! Charlotte has offended youI’ll throw her out right now!”

Christopher didn’t even glance at her, only glaring at me with furious, resentful eyes

Seeing this made Sharon even more excited. She moved closer, saying: Lord Deity, she’s just an ugly freak. I’m your bride! You must punish her severely!”

Alexander suddenly burst in and grabbed Sharon

Though the betrayal hurt, he still wanted to protect her when it

mattered

Don’t go near him! Everyone who’s seen the deity has died. Are you insane?”

But Sharon showed no gratitude, disgustedly shaking off his hand: Are you crazy? I’m the deity’s bride. Charlotte will only anger him!”

She fawned over Christopher: I have lots of moneyI can build you a bigger church and serve you. Charlotte’s just a disfigured wretch who doesn’t deserve you!”

Alexander snapped: Sharon, you bitch! I was wrong about you! I did so much for you, even hurt Charlotte, only to discover you’re nothing but a bitch!”

Sharon ignored the devastated Alexander, gazing at Christopher as she prepared to throw herself at him

Unfortunately, the next second, a single look sent her flying backwardshe didn’t even touch the hem of Christopher’s robes
