Chapter 6
“M–Mr. Donovan…” The pregnant woman who’d been screaming the loudest suddenly started stuttering.
People whispered about Axel Donovan.
The only heir to the Donovan empire, took over at twenty–five and tripled their market value in three years.
He’s ruthless in business, never gave an inch at the negotiating table.
Even New York’s oldest money families had to address him respectfully as “Mr. Donovan.”
But a month ago, he publicly announced his vasectomy, crushing every family’s hopes for a marriage alliance.
Everyone thought he’d lost his mind.
Who would inherit the Donovan legacy?
Axel took off his jacket and scooped up my bloodied body.
“Get the helicopter ready. We’re going to Switzerland.” His first words of the day.
Everyone sprang into action. Arranging flights, contacting medical teams and clearing the scene.
I was about to speak.
Axel seemed to read my mind, leaning close to whisper:
“The Donovan heir deserves every bit of protection we can give.”
My eyes went wide, my heart skipping a beat.
I remembered his text message.
That if I agreed, my baby would be his one and only heir.
He meant every word.
Theo was comforting a crying Emily when he saw the butler’s message on his phone. His heart stopped.
“Miss Amelia has disappeared.”
Emily pouted like a spoiled child:
“Baaabe…. why’d you say something like that? ‘As soon as the baby’s born, we’ll hit City Hall and file for divorce‘? Are you that desperate to give Amelia a proper wedding?”
Theo didn’t answer.
His mind went back to that scene at the birthday party seven days ago.
Amelia’s face went pale, staring emptily at her mother’s torn dress.
In that moment, he’d clearly seen the pain in her eyes.
But when Emily suddenly “collapsed,” he’d rushed to help her instead, ignoring Amelia completely.
He hadn’t called Amelia in seven days.

Chapter 6
Every time he picked up his phone, Emily’s voice echoed in his head:
“Love is like flying a kite–pull too tight and the string breaks. Time to give her the cold shoulder, let her realize how much she needs you.”
He thought Amelia would be like always.
When he got back, he’d sweet–talk her, Then she’d smile and throw herself into his arms.
But now she was gone. No one knew where.
He froze the secondary card, so he can’t go to the hospital, and now the villa is empty too.
His assistant said she hadn’t been to the office in ages. Even her closest friends couldn’t reach her.
“Now that your father married your mother and gave you the position of second Miss Brooks, you’re not illegitimate anymore. Plus your mom got all Mrs. Brooks‘ assets–you’ll never be hurt again.”
Theo stared at her and said slowly.
“But what about Amelia? She has nothing left now. I need to marry her.”
Emily’s face went white, tears instantly welling up. “Theo, I don’t care about the money. I just can’t bear to lose you…”
Theo let out a cold laugh.
“Can’t bear to lose me? Then tell your father to cancel the stock sale in three days. Give all of Mrs. Brooks‘ assets back to Amelia.”
Emily immediately shut up, unconsciously twisting her dress hem.
She couldn’t give up the money.
Watching her like this, Theo suddenly found it pathetic.
And in that moment–all the pity he once felt turned to disgust.
