Chapter 5
Logan returned quickly, holding a small pharmacy bag.
Inside were stomach pills, painkillers, cold medicine–and tucked among them, a pregnancy test.
Seeing me staring at it, Logan picked it up himself and spoke in a soft, coaxing voice.
“You haven’t been eating and now you’re throwing up. The pharmacist suggested testing, just in case, so I picked up two.”
I thought of the phone call he had just made outside.
He wasn’t worried about me.
He was scared I might be carrying his child.
I took the test in front of him.
One line.
A false alarm.
Logan let out a quiet breath of relief. After murmuring a few reassurances, he pulled me into bed and went back to sleep.
A few days later, I received a message from an unfamiliar number.
It was only an address and a time.
I went.
The place was a high–rise with sweeping glass windows, overlooking downtown.
Grace sat on a leather armchair near the window.
Her long curled hair rested lightly on her pale shoulders. The pearl buttons of her silk blouse gleamed under the light. Tiny diamonds sparkled from her earrings as she turned.
Elegant. Wealthy. And proud.
She raised an eyebrow, sizing me up from head to toe.
“I thought you’d have more sense. Didn’t expect you to stay so calm.”
Logan wanted to keep me in the dark, but Grace had come and pulled back the curtain.
I narrowed my eyes.
“What do you want?”
She
gave a short laugh.
“You know Logan’s real identity. You know he stayed with you just to provoke me. So why haven’t you taken the hint and walked away?”
She stood up from the sofa and looked down at me with contempt.
“That’s right. Someone poor and lowly like you probably felt lucky just to be deceived by a man like him, didn’t you?”
“Does Logan actually have to fake his death right in front of you before you finally let him

go?”

The words pierced like needles into my chest.
I pressed my lips together, but I also found it laughable.
“I’m curious too. Why would Logan rather stage this whole fake death act than just drive me out directly? Doesn’t that mean he still has me in his heart?”
Snap.
A sharp, clean slap.
I turned my head. The left side of my face burned.
Grace stared at me, her expression vicious.
“Emily, you’re so shameless. How can you say something that disgusting? Do you even believe yourself?”
My stomach churned and twisted and I couldn’t even feel the sting on my cheek.
Clutching my stomach, I felt the blood drain from my face.
Grace pulled back a wall of sheer drapes, revealing a mirrored wall behind it.
“You came all the way here today. I’ll give you a show.”
She sat back down on the leather sofa and pressed a small switch in her hand.
The mirror instantly transformed into a one–way window.
On the other side, seated on the same kind of leather sofa, was Logan.
My heart skipped slightly.
I had known Logan was the wealthiest man in the city, but I had never seen him like this.
He wore a custom–tailored black suit. Beneath gold–rimmed glasses, his lips were set in a straight line. Calm and cool.
He said to James casually, “The sponsorship for your institution should be arriving soon.”
“It’s always you who gets it done, Logan.”
Logan replied with a vague sound and didn’t say more.
James seemed to think of something.
“I’ve already spoken with the hospital and the funeral home. I’ll pick a proper day to handle the process.”
By process, he meant the fake death arrangements.
Logan took a sip of red wine, walked toward the floor–to–ceiling windows and looked out over the dazzling city below.
“Soon.”
For some reason, I heard something hesitant in his voice.
James chuckled.
“You’re generous. You even set up a life insurance policy with her as the beneficiary.”

“That policy is under the Walker Group. Fifty million dollars, all going to her.”
“In this city, who else gets fifty million just for dating a rich guy for three years?”
Logan didn’t answer. His gaze was heavy, lost in thought.
I lowered my eyes and could only laugh inwardly.
Fifty million dollars. Some people never even see that kind of money in a lifetime.
But I didn’t want it.

Grace stood up slowly, the massive diamond ring on her hand catching the light like a shard of fire.
“If you ever get bored, feel free to disappear on your own.”
“Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. Logan and I are getting engaged.”
I froze.
The light from the ring dazzled my eyes.
Grace opened the adjoining door and stepped into the next room, walking directly to Logan.
James, as expected, left the room and shut the door behind him.
Grace wrapped her arms around Logan’s waist from behind, her voice full of flirtation.
“Why didn’t you come see me these past couple of days?”
Logan came back to himself, his gaze lighting up with affection.
He wrapped one arm around her waist and answered in a quiet voice.
“You know I’ve been handling things. I’m worried if I don’t clean it up properly, it’ll affect you later.”
Grace gave him a pout and a glare.
“Three years and you couldn’t even keep your body for me. I haven’t even started with that yet.”
Logan smiled indulgently and brushed the tip of her nose.
