Chapter 19
The study door swung open before Winifred could react. Gordon, Linda, and Felix stood there and glared at her, their anger as clear as day. Winifred was frightened and hastily tried to explain. “Mom, Dad, Felix! What are you guys doing at home?”
They’d originally planned on going to the company, but Gordon had felt unwell. So, Linda had asked Felix to bring whatever urgent documents home. Who would’ve known that they would accidentally discover the secret Winifred had tried so hard to keep?
Linda stormed over to Winifred and grabbed her arm tightly, unable to keep her rage in check as she snarled, “Who are they? Why did they call you‘ sweetie‘? What did they mean by getting whatever money you can out of us?”
“It’s not what you think, Mom! I can explain!” Winifred started crying. Whenever she did this in the past, Linda’s heart would soften.
This time, however, Linda remained unmoved. She didn’t let go of Winifred.
“Mom, you’re hurting me!” Winifred pleaded, but Linda ignored her.
John Brown, the middle–aged man who hadn’t spoken thus far, suddenly charged forward and shoved Linda to the floor. “You’re hurting my daughter! I knew those reporters were right about something. You Courts are heartless! I shouldn’t have sent my daughter here to be tormented for the sake of money!”
He grabbed Winifred’s hand and started pulling her out of the house. “Let’s go, sweetie! We’re going home, and we’re not playing around with them anymore! They’re going to go bankrupt, anyway. You don’t need to pretend to be their daughter anymore!”
The Courts lost their mind when they heard him say Winifred had only been pretending to be who she was.
Gordon helped Linda up while Felix stopped John and Ruth. They shoved and shouted at each other. The situation quickly descended into chaos.
Half an hour later, the police arrived. After understanding the situation, everyone was taken to the hospital for a DNA test. The results showed that Winifred wasn’t related to the Courts at all. Her birth parents were indeed John and Ruth.
John spat, “I told you the truth, didn’t I? It’s your fault for not believing me! Your daughter probably died long ago after being taken by those human traffickers who sell organs, you idiots!”
Only then did the Courts learn that John and Ruth had witnessed the actual Winifred being kidnapped by human traffickers. At the time, there had been many incidents of human traffickers kidnapping children in the area. Rumor had it that an evil organ trafficking syndicate had been behind it.
Ruth and John hadn’t dared to call the police and had even picked up the necklace that the actual Winifred had dropped while struggling to break free. Years later, they saw the search notices the Court family had put up everywhere. Wanting to make a quick buck, they’d sent their daughter to the Court family and told her to irnpersonate Winifred.
The fake Winifred could clearly describe what had happened on the day of the kidnapping, and she’d produced the necklace. The Courts were none the wiser and instantly accepted that she was their Winifred. They forgot all about doing a DNA test.
As the fake Winifred gradually grew accustomed to living the carefree life of a wealthy heiress, she wanted to cut ties with John and Ruth. And so, she stopped giving in to their threats and stopped giving them money.
They lost their cool and came knocking on the Court family’s door, leading to the cat being let out of the bag.
Linda couldn’t handle the truth. She clutched her chest and collapsed on the floor.
Meanwhile, Gordon was furious. He grabbed a scalpel from a nurse and charged toward the fake Winifred. “How dare you lie to me, you bitch! You wormed your way into our home and turned everything upside down! You made me lose both Winnie and Izzy! I’ll kill you!”
