“What’s going on here?” I asked.
Everyone froze, heads turning toward me. The room went quiet.
An older woman–probably the girl’s mother–stepped forward nervously. “Luna, I apologize for my daughter. She meant no harm to Miss Scarlett.”
Before she could explain further, Scarlett cut in. “This stupid girl dropped dirty water all over my expensive new boots.” Her voice dripped with contempt.
I looked between them, noting the trembling girl and the puddle around Scarlett’s boots. “Did you
hit her?”
Scarlett rolled her eyes. “And what if I did? She’s nothing but a lowlife omega.”
My blood boiled. I’d been in this pack long enough to understand the hierarchy, but this was too
much.
“She might be an omega, but that doesn’t make her or any other omega less worthy,” I said, helping the girl stand. “Without our omega’s keeping headquarters clean, cooking our meals, or taking care of the pups, you’d have to do it all yourself.”
I examined the girl’s face where Scarlett had struck her. The mark was red and would likely bruise. Around us, a crowd had gathered, watching intently.

Chapter 84
“You do not hit anyone again,” I said, keeping my voice steady despite my racing heart. It’s not your job to handle problems. Do it again, and I’ll make you regret it. I won’t be pregnant forever and can easily deal with you when I’m not. The girl made a mistake and apologized. Leave her alone.
Scarlett sneered. “You think you’re so important just because you’re Jace’s mate.”
Her eyes narrowed as she examined me. “Let’s be clear–you’re just a human who got lucky. The Moon Goddess gave you powers, but your blood is still inferior.”
The crowd went silent.
“You weren’t born one of us,” she continued louder. “You don’t know our ways. You’re just pretending to be Luna when you don’t belong.”
Scarlett struggled against Hunter’s grip, her face red with anger. “My family has served this pack for generations with pure werewolf blood. Now we’re supposed to bow to some human Gabriel Silverbrook pitied? You’re nothing but a stray he took in.”
Several gasps echoed through the hall. Even Scarlett’s friends looked uncomfortable now.
“You can wear the title of Luna all you want,” she spat. “But underneath, you’ll always be that pathetic, weak human. The only reason Alpha tolerates you is because of some cosmic mistake by the Moon Goddess. He deserves a real werewolf as his mate, not some human pretending to be one
of us.”
I felt my hands shake with rage, but kept my voice steady. “Are you finished?”
Her momentary surprise gave me the opening I needed.
“No, I don’t think I’m important just because I’m Jace’s mate. But I won’t accept or watch you mistreat another person like you did today. I don’t care what rank you or anyone else has. Everyone is part of our pack. Everyone matters to this pack. Even you, despite your cruelty.”

“Yes, Luna,” Hunter answered with another respectful nod.
“Thank you, Hunter.”
“You can’t do that, you stupid bitch!” Scarlett yelled, struggling against Hunter’s grip. “You’re just a human wearing wolf’s clothing! Your punishment means nothing!”
She thrashed harder, nearly breaking free. “Everyone knows the truth! A brief time with a wolf spirit doesn’t erase what you are–trash picked up from the human world. Your bastard child will be half- human too–a mongrel instead of a true wolf!”
