Chapter 4

After agreeing to do the paternity test, my parents and I went to pick up Joy, only
to find Aron in the house, tugging and pulling at her.
When they saw us enter, both of them looked flustered for a moment.
“Aron, what are you doing here?” Roy’s expression darkened.
I had mentioned Aron to him yesterday, but I hadn’t told him that Aron and Joy
knew each other.
Aron was very polite in front of my
parents.
“Mr. and Mrs. Ryan, Joy said she was a little scared, so I came to check on her.

all. After all, we’re going to be family.”
Family?

I scoffed. I had no idea what method Joy had used to convince Aron that she was my long–lost sister.
Aron’s behavior seemed inappropriate to my family.
After all, he was still my fiancé in name. Even if he wanted to come along, he shouldn’t have come to Joy’s place alone.
More importantly, this place was still my parents‘ house.
Our plans for today were very private. Since Aron insisted on coming along, we might as well let him be the driver.

Joy quietly shared her experiences growing up in the back seat.

She said her adoptive mother treated her terribly. When she was in elementary school, she was forced to do all kinds of household chores and was frequently beaten and scolded. Her adoptive father was an alcoholic who also took his anger out on her. As she got older, her adoptive parents even considered marrying her off for money, so she studied hard to get into college.
In her description, she seemed like a very pitiful girl.
But my skeptical nature prevented me from completely believing her one–sided
story.

benefit them.
“How did you find out about your background?” I suddenly asked.
Joy wasn’t surprised by the question. Perhaps she had already confided in others before.
“Last year, when I went home, I

accidentally saw photos of Jade that my adoptive mother had secretly taken on her phone, along with some other pictures. She had labeled that album ‘Good
Daughter.‘ I noticed the necklace around her neck in the photos was identical to mine. Later, when my adoptive mother got drunk, she cursed and said her daughter was living a happy life with rich people and would take care of her.”

“I asked my adoptive father about it. He said when I was born, there were still a few days before my due date, but my adoptive mother insisted on giving birth that day.”
The story sounded too real. The necklace around Joy’s neck wasn’t fake. My parents couldn’t help but imagine their biological daughter going through all of this. Their hearts were breaking.
“Before you came to find my parents, didn’t you think to do a paternity test with your adoptive parents first to confirm
whether you were their biological child?” I asked again.
Joy stiffened and stammered, “I didn’t think of it at the time…”

Usually, when faced with the possibility of becoming a wealthy family’s heiress versus being from an ordinary family where the parents don’t love or care, anyone would instinctively avoid the latter.
“Jessie, enough,” Aron, who was driving, spoke up. “What are you constantly questioning your sister about? Whether she’s recognized or not is determined by blood relations. You can’t target her just because you have a good relationship with Jade, can you?”
I smiled, “You’re right, it is determined by
blood relations.”
Then let the paternity test results do the
talking.
