Chapter 7
Aria stiffened, staring at him in disbelief, her wolf bristling at the accusation. “I was targeting her?”
So, he had come to confront her for Seraphina’s sake.
“As your superior, she deserved your respect. You shouldn’t have humiliated her in front of everyone,” Kane said coldly.
A bitter ache tightened in Aria’s chest, her wolf whimpering at being scolded by their mate. But she forced a laugh. “You do realize I was the lead surgeon, don’t you? Or do you think I don’t have the authority to do that?”
“And do you realize that I have the authority to replace the lead surgeon?” Kane countered, his smile edged with mockery.
The words struck like silver claws, sending a tremor through both her and her wolf.
What a pity.
She had already submitted her transfer request.
Whether he replaced her or not didn’t matter anymore.
“From now on, don’t…”
“If you want to replace me, go ahead, Alpha Ravencrest,” she cut him off.
Kane’s smirk froze, his wolf stirring restlessly as he studied her with those penetrating amber eyes.
She had only ever called him “Alpha Ravencrest” in formal pack settings. Never had she used such distance in private, and certainly not with that tone that suggested he was nothing more than any other Alpha to her.
“What did you just call me?”
“Alpha Ravencrest,” Aria replied calmly. “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
His eyes darkened, his wolf clearly agitated by her sudden formality.
Before he could respond, a nurse rushed out, her scent sharp with panic. “Dr. Ashworth! The patient’s family is arguing with
Ms. Cross!”
Aria had time to react before the man beside her strode off, leaving her only a glimpse of his back.
Watching him hurry to Seraphina’s side, Aria couldn’t help but laugh hollowly, the sound bitter even to her own ears.
When had she ever been worth that kind of urgency from her own mate?
