Chapter 2
When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed.
Amy was curled up beside me, and when she saw I was awake, her eyes turned.red.
“I called Daddy, but he wouldn’t answer. He just had that mean lady warn Amy not to cause trouble.”
“Mommy, are you and Daddy… getting divorced?”
Tears filled my eyes as I turned my face away, my voice muffled.
“Amy, if Mommy and Daddy really got divorced, would you be sad?”
Amy gripped my hand. Her answer caught me completely off guard:
“No! Daddy only likes the mean lady. He lets her bully you, kick you out of your room, and force you to be a maid.”
“If Daddy really lost his memory, why can he remember his huge company but not who his real wife is?”
Exactly. Even a six–year–old could see through it.
Brant claimed he had amnesia, but he hadn’t forgotten his company or his complicated business relationships. He’d only forgotten me–his legitimate wife.
I’d navigated the business world for years and seen every dirty trick in the book, yet I’d fallen for such a shallow lie. Gritting my teeth, I mocked my own stupidity.
Before the accident, everyone called Brant the perfect husband. He never hid his love for me–from the moment we met, he’d pursued me relentlessly. When we were dating, he introduced me to all his friends, gave me all his bank passwords, and even before we were legally married, he was willing to put all his assets under my name.
How could someone like that change overnight? All because of five years with Selene–his first love he couldn’t forget or let go?
Brant, when you were playing me for a fool, did you ever think about the eight years we’d been together?
My eyes downcast, my heart filled with hatred and torment, Amy’s beat–up phone suddenly rang. It was Selene on
the line.
“Amy, are you with that maid?”
“This maid is completely out of line! Where did she take you? She’s not cooking or doing laundry–does she want to get fired?!”
Amy stayed silent, her mouth turning down in a pout.
I took the phone, but before I could speak, I heard Brant’s voice, tinged with nervousness.

Then, youre really at the hospital?”
I made a sound of confirmation, about to come clean, but Brant’s tone suddenly shifted
“How dare you Vivian! You promised to return my daughter to Selene today, and you have the nerve to fake being
“You think this gets you off the hook? Let me tell you something Amy is Selene’s daughter. You used your position to Kidnap Amy, and I’m being generous by not pressing charges!”
“And now you dare take it further by taking illness?! Just wait–I’m coming to the hospital right now to settle this!”
The line went dead. Amy’s face was already streaked with tears.
“Mommy, are you really going to give me to that lady I don’t even know?”
I sighed and reached out to ruffle Amy’s hair.
“Never. You’re Mommy’s biological daughter. I will never give you to anyone else.”
Amy’s tears turned to smiles. Exhausted, I was about to lie back down when the hospital room door was kicked open with a loud bang
Looking up, I saw Brant standing in the doorway, radiating fury, with Selene right behind him.
Around Selene’s neck, bold as brass, hung the gemstone necklace my parents had left me.
Seeing me lying pale in the hospital bed, Brant’s pupils dilated in shock.
“Vivian, you… you’re actually sick?”
I ignored Brant’s question, struggling to sit up as I glared at Selene with rage.
“Who gave you permission to touch my things!”
