Chapter 8
Three days later, Brant appeared again.
When he saw me, his face was full of helplessness as he returned the necklace..
“Vivian, I never thought you could be this cold and heartless. You know my predicament–why won’t you show me any understanding?”
I smiled indifferently, lowering my head to inspect my necklace, tenderly caressing each gemstone.
“When you played me for a fool and worked me to the bone as your maid, did you show me any understanding?”
Brant was instantly silenced. He pressed his temples lightly, unable to hide his exhaustion.
“Vivian, you’ve made your point. You haven’t lost anything, so come back with me.”
“We’ll go back to how things were before, I’ll make Selene leave, okay?”
I looked up into Brant’s eyes.
“If you really had money in your accounts, would you have returned this necklace to me?”
“You wouldn’t have. In your mind, I’m your possession. You can control my things and give away my daughter to anyone you please.”
“But you forgot–after eight years together, we don’t even have a marriage certificate, Brant Miller. I’m not your anything. I’m free.”
Brant’s mouth hung open, too many emotions flashing through his eyes at once. Anger, shock, panic, and finally sadness.
“Vivian, stop this–you’re scaring me!”
“You know how much I love you. Why are you threatening me over such a small thing!”
I found his reaction utterly ridiculous. Even more ridiculous than when I’d mingled with crowds, enduring mocking glances while playing the maid and secretly texting everyone to go along with it.
“A small thing? Ha. And I’m not threatening you–I’m informing you.”
“Brant, do you think my past behavior was about competing with Selene for your affection? You’re wrong.”
“I never stoop to fighting for a man’s heart. When you hurt me, I leave you. My world is that simple.”
I moved to close the door, but a pale hand suddenly blocked it.
It was Selene. She’d somehow followed him here.

Chapter 8
Selene’s eyes brimmed with tears.
“Sister Vivian, it’s all my fault. I never meant to intrude on your family. I’m willing to apologize.”
“I just beg you to return Brother Brant’s money. He worked so hard for so many years and treated you so well. How can you take his money and run over such a trivial matter? How can you face Brother Brant after doing this?”
After speaking, she looked silently at Brant, tears still fresh on her face, the picture of pitiful vulnerability.
But Brant just stared at her coldly.
“Who told you to come here and spout nonsense?”
“I did everything you asked, even hurt my wife and daughter for it. Now how can you talk about nothing but money
in front of Vivian?!”
“Selene, I really don’t understand you anymore!”
Selene’s expression froze as she looked away with resentment.
“I’m just worried about you, Brant! Even though you’d do anything for me, in the end I got nothing, didn’t I?”
nt’s face showed emotion again. He looked between us as if making some kind of choice.
seized this moment to burst into tears again.
“Brant, I don’t blame you for abandoning me back then! If not for this accident, I might never have reunited with you in this lifetime. I still remember all the good things you did for me.”
With that, Selene turned to leave. Brant suddenly spun around and grabbed her hand.
I watched them embrace and quietly applauded.
“So you came to find me for something? Just to perform this touching display of deep affection in front of me?”
Selene gripped Brant’s hand tightly, glaring at me angrily.
“Of course we have business! You ran off with all of Brother Brant’s savings from these years–you have to give them
back!”
“You won’t do anything for him or make any sacrifices for him. You don’t deserve to spend his money!”
She then looked up at Brant with tender eyes, and under her gentle gaze, Brant spoke again.
“Vivian, it’s not safe for a woman to carry around so much money.”
“Since Selene has spoken up, could you possibly…”
