“That’ll be one hundred and eighty–eight dollars total.” The computer repair technician printed out a receipt and handed it
to me.
I paid him and handed over the heavy laptop bag.
“Can you have it fixed within a week?”
The man lifted the bag with a smile. “Don’t worry, it’ll basically be ready in two days.”
I nodded and walked him to the door under Gavin’s watchful
gaze.
As soon as he left, I closed the front door, only to feel a pair of arms wrap around me from behind.
A gentle voice came from above my head: “What made you suddenly decide to get your computer fixed?”
My body stiffened as I expressionlessly pried Gavin’s hands away. “I still have a lot of research materials on my computer.”
A husky voice whispered in my ear as he leaned down to nuzzle my neck, his hands becoming restless: “Have you forgotten what Nash calls me?”
A walking database.

I pushed him away again: “Don’t do this. Juliette and Ryan are still home.”
His grip tightened suddenly, giving me a hard squeeze before letting go: “Come to my room tonight.”
I lowered my eyes: “I understand.”
Every night, Juliette would still prepare lemon water or milk for
- me.
I would take a sip in front of her, then secretly pour the rest into empty plastic bottles that Ryan had finished drinking from after she left.
Today, I packed all those samples into my backpack and secretly gave them to the computer repair worker.
I also paid him extra under the table, asking him to help me
these samples to a lab for drug testing.
Afraid that Gavin might become suspicious, I’d been acting very compliant lately, and his guard around me had gradually lowered.
But the cost of this compliance was obvious.
Late at night, this outwardly indifferent man would always find ways to torment me.

Only when I was exhausted and unable to resist would he hold me in his arms, whispering gentle words.
One night, I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open, only aware of Gavin running his fingers through my disheveled hair.
He asked in a low voice: “You’ve been so well–behaved lately. Are you plotting something?”
My heart skipped a beat. Had he found out?
No, impossible.
The computer repair guy was someone I’d randomly found online. There was no way he could know.
Lying in his arms, I asked softly: “Gavin, did we… know each
other before?”
The body holding me suddenly froze, and he buried his head in my neck: “Why are you asking that?”
His reaction only made me more confused. What was Gavin
afraid of?
Three days later, I received my repaired computer.
When I opened the file folder, I discovered there was an additional test report inside.

I couldn’t wait to click it open and read it.
The results shocked me.

The tested samples contained no prohibited or harmful substances, and certainly no sleeping pills or anything like that.
Instead, the lab had used five samples, and every single one tested positive for the same component–donepezil.
I looked it up online and learned this was a medication for treating memory loss, commonly used for elderly Alzheimer’s patients.
Why was Gavin giving me this?
