I couldn’t help but feel curious about the Mrs. Harris that Ella had mentioned.
Thinking back to that person in the video, I became even more convinced that it definitely wasn’t me.
That evening, watching Ryan struggle drowsily through his math homework, I simply pulled him up and walked over to the window to get some fresh air and clear his head.
I asked, “When did you come back for Christmas?”
Ryan replied, “Around the end of last Christmas, I think. Why?”
I continued, “Do you know Ella?”
Ryan frowned, “Who?”
I said, “When you came back, was Juliette the only one in the house?”
Ryan nodded, “I think so. I heard there used to be a maid who quit after getting pregnant.”
I sighed, figuring that Ryan must have arrived shortly after that maid left.
Looking at him, I thought that if I escaped with him, Gavin

would probably go after him first and wouldn’t notice me.
Besides, it really wasn’t safe for Ryan to stay around a psychopath.

I said, “You’ve got half a semester left before graduation. What are your plans? Which school are you thinking of applying to?”
Ryan pursed his lips, “Do I even have a choice? Uncle Gavin said I either go to the university he picks, or I can get lost and go back to Malmo.”
I pressed my lips together, “Maybe you could have a third option.”
Tearing this, Ryan looked at me in surprise, “I could have
nother choice?”
I said, “Half a semester’s time–if you can make it into the top 30 on the practice test at the start of the term, how about I take you and run?”
Juliette had three days off each month, and this time it happened to coincide with Gavin’s business trip.
Only Ryan and I were left in the house.
Gavin had obviously anticipated this situation, but he believed I wouldn’t give up on graduation, so he didn’t think I would try to
escape,

In the early morning, I was still asleep when Gavin got up.

I only felt a sharp pain in my jaw, and when I couldn’t breathe, he finally let go, gripping my face and watching me cough and choke painfully before I finally managed to swallow.
His hand kept applying pressure, but his voice was incredibly gentle, “You need to behave while I’m gone.”
I said, “I understand.”
Seeing how quickly I agreed, he narrowed his eyes, “Why are you agreeing so fast?”
Gavin chuckled softly and pinched me through the blanket, “If you dare run, I’ll break your legs.”
Seeing me shiver slightly, he was finally satisfied and left.
As soon as he was gone, I put my plan into action.
I gave Ryan a set of practice test questions, then quietly made my way to the villa’s main circuit breaker and flipped the switch.
Now all the surveillance cameras were useless.
I walked straight into the study and felt around the bookshelves.
Before long, a hidden door popped out from the wall nearby,

I had discovered this secret room by accident–sometimes Gavin would come here in the middle of the night.
But when I came looking for him, he would always disappear.
That’s when I realized there was a hidden room behind the
study.
I pushed open the hidden door and walked in. Behind the door
was a suite.
I turned on my phone’s flashlight to illuminate the entire suite. I found the layout incredibly familiar.
The “me” in the video slept here every day, and even the bathroom walls in the suite were identical to those in the video.
My heart leaped with excitement–I felt like I was on the right track.
I walked around the suite and discovered there was another
door.
That door seemed to lead to another room.
I frowned, gathered my courage, and opened the door.
Inside was pitch black, and a cold, eerie chill crept along the floor toward me. I immediately turned on my flashlight.
