Chapter 14

That was my name on the marriage certificate, my photograph.
The Mrs. Harris that Ella mentioned–that was me.
How was this possible?
Had Gavin and I been married all along?
This couldn’t be right. I’d only arrived at Harris Manor this month and had barely seen him a handful of times.
My hands trembling, I set down the marriage certificate.
Beneath it lay another file folder similar to the ones I’d seen on the bookshelf.
However, this folder was much thicker than the previous ones.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I opened the folder. Inside were dozens of photographs.
But this time, every single photo was of Gavin.
These pictures looked more like they’d been taken secretly.
Each shot was from a distance, not one showing Gavin looking directly at the camera.

This was Gavin’s secret room, his box, and the password had even been his birthday,
So did that mean he’d taken these surveillance photos of himselfy
Was there something wrong with him?
As I continued examining the folder’s contents, I found Gavin’s personal resume, and beneath that was a portable hard drive,
I squinted, clutching the box as I returned to my room.
Back in my room, I immediately opened my laptop and plugged in the hard drive.
The drive showed a capacity of 200GB, while my computer only had 50GB of available space.
This clearly wasn’t ordinary backup data.
Opening the video files one by one, I watched for a long time but never found any trace of myself.
Gavin was the star of every video.
He was in his office, at home, in his car, in the bathroom…
Compared to my mere 50GB of recordings, this 200GB of surveillance covered virtually every aspect of Gavin’s life, as if

some stalker had been obsessing over him.
I exited the first folder and opened the second one.

Unlike the first, these videos were clearly recorded on a phone.
The footage still featured Gavin, just shot from an even greater distance.
Along with the images, I could hear my own voice.
“Gavin went to the coffee shop today. After he finished, I’ll go see what he was drinking.”
“Oh, sorry, this belongs to my boyfriend–he left it here. I’m taking it back for him.”
“Sure, no problem… Hmm, he didn’t even finish it.”
“Looks like he doesn’t like coffee. He ordered a latte–actually tastes pretty good…”
“Today Gavin was eating in the cafeteria with some woman. Is she his girlfriend?”
“That woman is so ugly. How could Gavin possibly like someone like that?”
“Oh, turns out they don’t even know each other. Well, okay. The staff already cleared away all the dishes–they’re so fast…”

“Gavin really loves coming to the library. Does he have to sit in that corner spot?”
“This filming angle is a bit tricky. Whatever, I’ll just sit across from him and pretend to play on my phone…”
“Christmas is coming up. Are you going home, Gavin?”
“He’s actually taking the subway home. I’ll go too.”
“God, he even has to climb a mountain. He lives in such a huge mansion up on the mountain.”
“How do I get in? Wait, the door’s actually open…”
A chill crept up from my feet, spreading throughout my entire body.
All the videos documented how I had been stalking Gavin.
I had even secretly broken into his home and hidden under his bed for a week.
This made me look like a complete and utter stalker.
But the most terrifying part was that I had no memory of any of
this.
With shaking hands, I closed that folder and opened the third

one.

In the third folder, every video thumbnail showed Gavin’s selfie.
I randomly clicked on one, and Gavin’s voice drifted out slowly: “Amelia, I know you definitely don’t remember. But that’s okay —we can get to know each other again today.”
