Chapter 6 I Don’t Love You Anymore
I just found out Lucas gave my mother 15 million as a turnaround fund–said it was my dowry.
The employees noticed my hidden resentment. I lowered my head, too scared to speak. Once they left, my parents sighed at me. “You have no choice now. You caused this mess–you fix it.”
I nodded quickly, swore I didn’t like Chris, and swore I’d really marry Lucas.
They still didn’t believe me. The disappointment in their eyes stung. So I said, “Fine–let’s get the marriage certifi-
cate.”
Right as the stamp was about to come down, Chris called out to stop. He grabbed my hand, face dark. “No need to go this far just to spite me. Quit the act.”
Lucas‘ fist cracked as he stood and stepped closer. “Human bones are tough. Want to try again?”
Chris let go and backed off a few steps, staring at me in disgust. “Are you using that guy to provoke me? Everyone knows what kind of man Lucas is. Just got out, and my face is all messed up. Even if you can’t have me, you didn’t need to stoop this low. You’re still carrying my child. I don’t want my child to call that guy ‘Dad‘.”
He sounded as if he’d finally found a reason to lose it. “You knew I was marrying Rachel. You followed me on pur- pose, wanting me to see you getting married? Carrying my child and marrying someone else? Fine, I admit–you got to me. Let’s go back.”
The more he spoke, the smoother it got. Even his furrowed brows relaxed. Rachel stared at me with venom in her eyes but didn’t dare move closer because of Lucas.
I grabbed Lucas‘ hand. His palm was thick with calluses. For a second, I forgot what I was going to say. All I could think was this rough hand must’ve hit many people…
Lucas spoke. “I’m marrying my wife. What does this have to do with you? What do you say, wifey?”
I nodded.
Chris scoffed like I wasn’t worth talking to. “You chased me for years. Even pulled the suicide card. Now you say you don’t love me? Do you believe that?
“Wifey, huh? Still acting? Didn’t you say you were throwing a wedding? Where is it? Couldn’t go through with it, huh? A thug fresh out of prison after ten years and a washed–up, love–obsessed wreck. What a pair.”
A crowd pointed and whispered about me. Chris spoke lightly, casually, about how crazy I used to be chasing after him. My eyes burned red with anger.
Lucas stood silently beside me, but I felt wronged on his behalf.

Yes, I used to like Chris. But what was wrong with openly pursuing someone? He rejected me, yet still treated me kindly–went shopping with me, carried me home. Every time I tried to give up, he’d come closer, making me wonder if trying a little harder would make him love me.
He played me. He played with my sincerity.
Lucas did nothing wrong. He saved my family. I was the one with poor judgment, and I deserve the blame–not him.
I thought of the 15 million and my parents, who aged ten years because of my messy love life. I snatched the stamp and slammed it down while Chris laughed.
Silence.
The marriage certificate now bore a clear embossed seal. I shoved it in Chris‘ face. “Take a good look. I’m married!
“I had the baby aborted ages ago. Hear that? I’m not saying it again.”
And finally, one word at a time, I said, “I. Don’t. Love. You. Anymore!”
