Chapter 10 The End
He’d lost weight. The suit that once fit him now hung loose. He looked up at me, eyes bloodshot, tears welling up be- hind his gold–rimmed glasses.
Chris slowly walked over, then knelt–just like he used to–and tried to help me put on my shoes. But Lucas pulled me tightly into his arms, shielding me completely. “No need. I’ve got it.”
Lucas calmly slipped the shoe onto my foot. Chris just stood there, dazed.
As I tried to get up and leave, Chris knelt again.
Back straight, head lifted with some kind of stubborn pride, he opened his palm. In it was a silver ring—one I’d thrown away.
It was ridiculous. I had once treasured that ring. But it wasn’t something he gave me. He’d left it in a drawer. I put it on, foolishly thinking it meant something.
He never said a word about it. So I made up a whole story in my head, convinced he just didn’t know how to express himself.
That ring wasn’t even my size. I forced myself to wear it for ten years.
Now, the dent on my finger had faded. On that same finger was the diamond ring Lucas made himself. One of a kind
in the world.
So was his love.
Chris‘ gaze dimmed when he saw the diamond. He pulled out a ring box and opened it. Inside was a pink diamond— one I used to like.
“Keira, you always said you liked this. I actually bought it a long time ago. I love you more than you think. I just did- n’t know how to say it. I spent three days finding that silver ring. I know I was wrong. You spent ten years on me–let me spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
Lucas stood silently beside me, his face cold–but his hands behind his back were clenched tight, sweating.
I took Lucas‘ hand. “Let’s go. My parents must be getting anxious.”
After the Lawrence family pulled through their crisis, I returned to the company, starting from the bottom. Only then did my parents begin to forgive me.
We couldn’t let anything go wrong today–not on our wedding day, not on this lucky day.
Just as we stepped past the door, police stormed in. “Chris, you are under arrest for theft of trade secrets and fraud.”
Not far away, Rachel stood grinning wickedly, “Trying to run off with that bitch? Dream on, Chris!”

After the wedding, it was just Lucas and me. He finally broke down, hugging me and sobbing. “Wifey, he tried to take you away, my wife that I worked so hard to marry. Sob, sob. That bastard!”
He kept cursing–but then something shifted. The next thing I knew, it was me who was crying instead.
