Chapter 12 Letting Go
“You’ve worked hard” Louis took a sip of the lemon water and said slowly.
“No, it’s nothing. I’m just at home all day, there’s nothing to bother me. You, on the other hand, have to face so many things outside. You must be really tired. Eat more.” Freya smiled.
In fact, just thinking about it, it was obvious. The Graham family had once been a family that others could not even aspire to. Louis‘ grandpa, Edward Graham, had been so influential that no one dared to confront the Graham family when he was alive. Louis, who had always been the most outstanding, had been constantly compared to by others and looked down upon while growing up. This alone had fueled much resentment over the years.
Now that Edward was gone, the other members of the Graham family only thought about how to divide up what was left of the family’s power. They couldn’t wait for Louis to fall, and would never extend a helping hand. Others just wanted to swallow the Graham family’s assets, and they were more than willing to kick Louis when he was down, relishing the chance to see someone who had once been untouchable now under their heel.
Freya had never understood while reading novels why Louis always refused to let his friends help him, even though accepting their help would have kept him from falling. Unfortunately, their relationship wasn’t great now, so she couldn’t ask. She figured that Louis, being once a big shot, must have his own reasons.
During the meal, Freya wasn’t sure how well Louis had caten, but she was fully satisfied. She guessed that Louis probably didn’t mind the food she made because he ate quite a bit.
“I’ll put the dishes in the kitchen. You don’t need to do anything. I’ll wash them after I nap this afternoon.” Freya threw the dishes into the kitchen sink, washed the fruit, and placed it on the coffee table before continuing to type away.
Writing things she had written before was quick for her. Plus, her typing speed was already fast from practice. By the time the morning was over, she had finished a 2,000–word outline. At this rate, she figured she could finish the 20,000 words by tomorrow and submit it. Freya planned to write several stories while she waited for results. She wanted to cast a wide net and catch more opportunities. This was a critical period for them, and they needed money. Since she didn’t understand business, she could only try to earn more to lessen Louis‘ burden.
Louis returned to his room, and the door shut. She had no idea what he was doing there.
Around one–thirty in the afternoon, Freya forced herself to close the computer and go take a nap. The living room grew quiet.
In his bedroom, Louis hesitated before replying to his brother on his phone. “Liam, never mind. I’ll watch her a bit longer. Don’t check her past for now. It’s only been two days. Maybe I’m overthinking things, who knows. Let’s wait a bit longer.”
Less than an hour later, the alarm went off. Freya crawled out of bed, feeling a little dizzy. She shuffled to the bathroom in her slippers and found the door was closed. Mentally, she grumbled to herself, What’s the point of closing the door? So idle!
She grabbed the handle and yanked the door open, just as she was about to step in. She looked up and bumped face to face with the person inside. Freya blinked a few times, expressionless, and closed the door again. Holding her face in embarrassment, she shouted into the bathroom, “Sorry, I was half asleep, I thought I was the only one here.”
After saying that, she ran to her room and shut the door, wishing she could just disappear. What an awkward moment, running into her supposed husband in the bathroom!
It took a while for her to regain composure. She turned the door handle and stepped out of her room. Just as she did, Louis came out of the bathroom. They once again bumped into each other face to face, though there was still a distance of about 13 or 16 feet between them.
