Chapter 5
Joseph ended his phone call with his father before asking, “Aren’t you overthinking things?”
Seeing how he continued to play dumb, I slapped him hard across the face.
“Joseph Gunther, you really are a shameless bastard. You tried to trade my future for Madison’s favor. You’re despicable.”
His cheek had reddened at the spot where my palm had made contact with his skin. He stared at me steadily and said, “Lucy, you’ve misunderstood.”
I told him, “I applied for Clairefield University, not Delasaint. The woman in your heart won’t be able to become a lawyer.”
Joseph’s calm facade finally cracked as he panicked. He grabbed my shoulders and pleaded, “I’m begging you, Lucy. Give up your university spot to Madison. I’ll give you anything that
you want.”
I yanked myself out of his grip and said coldly, “Give me ten billion dollars.”
“What?”
“Give me ten billion dollars,” I repeated. “Only then will I give up my university spot to
her.”
Joseph was stunned.
I scoffed. “If you can’t afford it, then don’t offer in the first place. You truly are shameless
to a fault.”
He didn’t seem bothered by how I scolded him and simply said, “Lucy, Madison’s parents
died because they saved me. I owe her this.”
As I aimed a powerful kick at him, I raised my voice and screamed, “Why should it concern me that your family owes her? Why do I have to clear your debt for you?”

Joseph tried to grab me, but my emotions were spiraling out of control. “Get lost! Don’t touch me! All of you are despicable. It makes me sick!”
Hurt was written all over his features. “I’m sorry, Lucy. I’m begging you. Please amend your university application form.”
How could he still say something so awful?
“Get lost. If you want to clear your debt to Madison, use your own future to exchange for hers.”
I retrieved my keys and opened the door to my house. But before I could step inside, Joseph hugged me and continued begging me. “If you give up your spot, I won’t attend university either. I’ll stay with you for the rest of my life.”
I delivered a backhand slap to Joseph’s cheek. “Get out of my sight, vermin!”
I hadn’t vented all my frustrations yet. Driven by rage, I kicked him over and over again. Joseph continued to beg as he did his best to dodge my blows. It was unbelievable how thick–skinned he was.
With one well–aimed kick to his abdomen, he was sent rolling down the stairs.
I stood over him, my eyes cold as glaciers. Fighting against the pain, Joseph staggered back up to his feet. I turned around and entered my house. I wasn’t worried about Frank amending my application form, as I had changed the password to my account a long time ago. No one else should be able to access it.
I wasn’t sure if Joseph had given up, but he didn’t bother me again after that day.
I waited for half a month, but I didn’t receive my acceptance letter. It was then that I realized someone had already taken my university spot.
It appeared that Madison had given up on Delasaint University and decided to attend Clairefield University instead. Fury raged in my heart, but I forced myself to calm down.
I called the police and told them through broken sobs, “Someone took my university spot.”

The female officer who had helped me with my university application form ended up being responsible for my case. She asked, “Are you certain?”
I nodded. “I didn’t receive my acceptance letter, but Madison already received hers. I
scored 702 points while she only scored around 400.”
It was obvious that something was amiss.
I followed the female officer and her colleague as they headed over to Frank’s home. Panic
flashed across Frank’s face when he saw us.
I sobbed, “That’s him! He’s the one who took my spot and gave it to Madison!”

“Lucy, what are you talking about?” Frank asked, pretending to be calm.
“I didn’t receive my acceptance letter,” I said, emphasizing each word as I glared at him.
Frank attempted to defend himself. “Could it be that you set your sights on a university beyond your reach? If so, you can’t blame me for taking your university spot.”
The female officer said, “I watched Lucy submit her university application form myself. Her results should have guaranteed her enrollment in Clairefield University.”
Frank’s expression twisted as he whipped his head around to look at me. I smirked at him, knowing exactly what he had planned.
