“Come in.”
Gregory was standing in front of the floor–to–ceiling window, his fall figure stretched across the floor by the moonlight coming through the glass.
Natalie walked over. When she caught a glimpse of her shadow slowly overlapping with Gregory’s. She smiled slightly.” Xander’s doing a lot better after eating.”
“Alright,” Gregory replied. He then glanced over and added politely, “Thank you.”
“Greg, you don’t have to be so formal with me,” Natalie said gently
“I’ve always liked Xander. When he wanted to move in with me, I was honestly happy. But… I’ve never raised a kid before. I just thought if he liked something, I should buy it for him and try to give him whatever he wanted.
“I didn’t realize it would cause problems like this. I’m really sorry, Greg. I messed up. I’ll make it up for it.”
She lowered her head, sounding completely sincere, as though it was a genuine mistake. Her tone was so earnest there wasn’t anything to pick apart.
Gregory studied her for a moment. When he thought about how Xander had finally started eating properly because of Natalie, the tension in his brow eased a little.
“If you need help with your next exhibition, just let me know,” he uttered, not sounding as cold anymore.
Natalie’s eyes brightened instantly. “Okay!”
“It’s getting late. I’ll have Martin drive you back.”
Martin was one of Gregory’s most trusted people. If he was letting Martin send her home, it meant that he’d lowered his guard a
little bit.
Natalie let out a breath of relief quietly. Watching Gregory’s sharp profile in the moonlight, she felt a surge of ambition–she
wanted to take another step closer.
But right then, Gregory’s phone rang.
He answered the call, frowning slightly. “You want to talk about the project? Got it. I’m on my way.”
After that, he grabbed his coat and left without hesitation.
Natalie stayed where she was, watching him disappear down the hallway. She clenched her fingers a little, unwilling to accept how quickly the moment had ended.
Still, she knew she couldn’t rush things. She had to be patient if she wanted to patch things up between her and Gregory.
Reminding herself to stay calm, she exhaled slowly and pulled out her phone, dialing Eleanor’s number.
“Thank you for your help, Eleanor. Things are much better between Greg and me now.”
Honestly, when Gregory had publicly announced Anathea’s identity and left her hanging, Natalie had been at a complete loss for
what to do.
But instead of sitting back and doing nothing, she’d dug into the situation and found out the real reason Gregory was angry was because she’d been careless with Xander.
That was why she’d gone to Eleanor for help. She’d asked Eleanor to tell Gregory to come back home so she would have a chance to fix things. And it had worked.
Thinking about that, Natalie finally felt her nerves settle a little.

However, Eleanor didn’t sound warm at all. “Don’t make a habit of it. I know you’re trying to get closer to Xander so you can hold on to Gregory, but you really messed up this time.”
Natalie froze for a second. This was the first time Eleanor had ever sounded this harsh.
Thinking Eleanor was just upset because of Xander, Natalie quickly softened her tone. “I understand, Eleanor. I’ll be more careful from now on. I’ll make sure Xander is well taken care of
Eleanor cut her off sharply, “Taking care of someone else’s kid is useless. Raising a child yourself is different.”
“I…” Natalie paused, her expression shifting slightly. Then, she immediately caught on to what Eleanor meant.
“Got it. Thank you for the reminder, Eleanor.”
After hanging up, Natalie pulled a small packet of powder from her pocket, her lips curving into a dark, knowing smile.
She needed to take advantage of Anathea’s absence. She had to make sure Xander became completely attached to her. That way, she could move even closer to Gregory. And once she did, Anathea would never be able to come back.
