Chapter 3
When I said this, my heart was bleeding.
Jasper didn’t notice. After hearing me out, he looked surprised, then held me tightly. “Trust me, this is only temporary.”
“Once we’ve fulfilled my parents‘ wishes, I’ll take you abroad and we’ll start a fresh life as a family of three.”
He had considered everything thoroughly, even deciding where we would settle in the future. The only thing he hadn’t accounted for was that I already knew about Carson’s existence.
Jasper moved quickly, his cagerness to legitimize his illegitimate son quite apparent.
Within days, he brought the child over.
“As the child’s mother, you should be the first to meet him, right?”
Jasper’s face showed caution, fearing my rejection.
I looked at the well–dressed boy standing outside the hospital room, radiating privilege at first glance, and my hatred peaked.
Why did his illegitimate son get to grow up with a silver spoon, without worries, while my poor baby never even got
to see the world before suffocating to death!
But I still kept a smile on my lips. “Carson, right? Come here.”
Only when I clearly saw the pendant hanging around his neck did I understand true despair!
An identical pendant had been placed in my hands by Jasper on the day I reached nine months of pregnancy.
He said it was a family heirloom.
But Carson’s was obviously older and more valuable.
I swallowed my grievances. “Young man, who usually takes care of you? Is she here?”
I was eager to meet this Vanessa Quinn, to see what kind of woman she was.
No sooner had I spoken than the crisp sound of heels echoed in the hospital room. Then, Jasper’s expression changed dramatically.
“Jasper, the child is young, and I was worried, so I came up… You don’t mind, do you?”
It was her!

Chapter 3
Over these past few years, every time Jasper got drunk and I went to pick him up, I would see her shadow. So she had already infiltrated our lives!
I bit my teeth hard, unwilling to show weakness.
“Hello, Mrs. Thornwood. I’m Carson’s mother and a cardiothoracic surgeon at this hospital. I’m Vanessa Quinn.”
She claimed she and Jasper were college classmates who had Carson after an “accident.”
Yet he claimed Vanessa was just the adoptive mother.
But I knew these were just more lies!
This adulterous couple couldn’t even admit their affair honestly.
“Excuse me for laughing, but Carson just loves making these little trinkets.”
Vanessa’s bracelet suddenly came loose. I stared at it, then shifted my gaze to Jasper’s empty wrist.
I had seen it before.
Jasper had returned home wearing that crude bracelet more than once.
Turned out Vanessa was marking her territory!
I could no longer be gracious, silently enduring this suffocating atmosphere.
“I’m tired, Jasper. Please leave.”
Jasper left without suspicion.
As Vanessa walked out, her smug smile lingered in my mind, refusing to dissipate even minutes later.
I clutched my heart tightly, forcing myself not to cry.
That night, Vanessa came to the VIP floor during her night shift.
“Carson says he really likes Mrs. Thornwood.”
“This is a bracelet he made for her. I’m sorry I forgot to take it off earlier today.”
Jasper rubbed his temples. “I don’t usually wear it. She probably didn’t notice. You’d better not appear in front of her again–I’m afraid she’ll get suspicious.”
“That’s good. I was worried she might misunderstand.”
Suddenly, Vanessa changed the subject. “Have you told Mrs. Thornwood about Carson’s acceptance into the family registry? With her legs in such condition, perhaps I should step in…”

“No need,” Jasper refused without hesitation.
“You just need to take care of Carson.”
“Vivienne is the Thornwood family’s matriarch, my wife. At such occasions, she should be present.”
Just then, a doctor came to report that I had fallen from
my wheelchair.
Jasper immediately ran back to the room, sweating with anxiety.
“Vivienne! Are you alright?”
Before he entered, I had mercilessly twisted my wrist, tears flowing from the pain.
What actually happened wasn’t a fall–1 was walking independently when a doctor suddenly entered to take my temperature.
In panic, I had to pretend to fall.
Jasper held me tightly. Hearing the doctor describe the scene, the concern in his eyes seemed about to overflow.
“Vivienne, why are you so foolish?”
“Whether you can stand again or not, I will always love you.”
I hugged him back.
If not for Vanessa and Carson, perhaps I truly would have been the happiest woman in the world.
