“Mommy! Wake up, please.” Ruby rushed into the bedroom and saw Sylvia collapsed on the floor. Terrified, she burst into tears and rushed to her, shaking her desperately.
Joanna followed into the room and saw Sylvia collapsed on the floor. ‘Serves her right,‘ she sneered to herself. ‘If only she’d just die here and never wake up again.’
Ruby frantically searched around for a phone to call 911. Spotting Joanna standing in the doorway, she shouted angrily, “You mean lady, why are you still here? Get out right now!”
“Ruby, how could I possibly leave when your mommy is in this condition?” Joanna crouched down with feigned concern to check Sylvia’s breathing. Finding it steady, she thought bitterly, ‘Damn, she’s not dying after all..
A sinister glint flashed in Joanna’s eyes as she swiftly reached into her bag and pulled out a half–empty bottle. She remembered overhearing something at the Blair house the other day–Sylvia couldn’t have anything sweet. It triggered a serious reaction.
“What are you doing? Stop it.” Ruby was about to dial 911 when she saw Joanna trying to force a drink into Sylvia’s mouth. She rushed over immediately. “My mom can’t have that. Take it away!”
“Ruby, Sylvia clearly has low blood sugar and needs something sweet,” Joanna said, ignoring Ruby’s protests as she forcibly poured the drink into Sylvia’s mouth.
Ruby got shoved to the floor. Her eyes widened with panic–she knew that drink would set off Sylvia’s allergy. But she was just a kid–she couldn’t stop
Joanna.
Tears welled up fast as her face crumpled in helpless fear. Then it hit her–she dialed with trembling fingers. Her voice broke as she cried into the speaker, barely making sense. “Please come now! Mom’s being poisoned–she’s going to die!”
Byron was in the middle of a meeting when his phone suddenly rang. Anyone else, he would’ve ignored the call. But when he saw the name flash on the screen, his eyes lit up.
It was his little girl–his Ruby. Last time they met, he’d made sure to give her his number, just in case.
Byron’s face instantly darkened when he heard Ruby’s frantic sobs. ‘Someone’s trying to kill Sylvia? Who the hell is it?‘ he thought. He hung up and
stormed out of the conference room.
All the executives were stunned. Everyone could see Byron’s unusual urgency–he actually abandoned such an important meeting. This had never
happened before. And he looked absolutely livid. Whatever was going on, someone was about to have a very bad day.
Byron jumped into the car and told the driver to head straight for Sylvia’s place.
At this moment, Sylvia’s body was already going into a violent allergic reaction. Even while unconscious, she curled up in agony, her skin beginning to
flush red.
Joanna stood by, watching coldly as Sylvia suffered, her eyes glinting with malicious delight. ‘So she really is allergic to sweets,’ Joanna thought.
Ruby sobbed hysterically, pounding Joanna. “You evil woman! Why did you make Mommy drink that?”
Joanna frowned slightly and shoved Ruby aside/“I’m saving Sylvia. She passed out from low blood sugar–what’s wrong with giving her a drink?”
Too upset to explain anything to Joanna, Ruby just cried even harder, her voice already hoarse from sobbing as she desperately threw herself at Joanna again.
Joanna, growing impatient, grabbed Ruby by the collar, ready to shove her aside–when suddenly, hurried footsteps approached. She instinctively spun around, only to see Byron standing in the doorway, his face a mask of ice.

Chapter 94
“Byron… what are you doing here?” Joanna’s voice trembled as she hastily explained, “Sylvia… she’s having a low blood sugar episode. We need to get her to the hospital now.”
“Byron…” Ruby sobbed uncontrollably. “I told her not to touch Mommy… but she still made Mommy drink it…”
Joanna gradually calmed down. She knew exactly what standing she had in Byron’s heart—he would never take a little girl’s word over hers.
Byron was blazing with fury, his jaw clenched and veins throbbing at his temples. In a blind rage, he lashed out, landing a vicious slap across Joanna’s
face.
The slap landed with a resounding force, sending Joanna staggering back several steps. For a moment, her vision swam and she nearly collapsed to the
floor.
“Joanna, what the hell is wrong with you?” Byron gritted his teeth. Without another word to Joanna, he scooped up Sylvia and rushed toward the door. Suddenly, he spun around, eyes blazing. “Joanna, if anything happens to Sylvia, I swear you’ll pay with your life.”
Joanna was utterly terrified by Byron’s words. Although she had sensed Byron and Sylvia’s relationship thawing lately, never in a million years did she imagine he’d actually hit her–for Sylvia’s sake. He even threatened to make Joanna pay with her life.
Byron was fuming. He wasn’t just furious over what happened to Sylvia–he was just as mad for Ruby. Joanna usually came across as the responsible h but this time, she had completely let him do, and she’d even made Ruby cry.
Ruby followed Byron down the stairs.
Too terrified to stay behind, Joanna covered her stinging cheek and trailed after them, sniveling pitifully. “Byron, I know I messed up, but I swear–I had no idea Sylvia couldn’t have that drink.”
Joanna was still trying to talk her way out of it, but Byron wasn’t having it. He loaded Sylvia into the back seat, then scooped up Ruby and got in with her.
Sylvia’s skin had turned a frightening shade of red, her face contorted in obvious agony. Tears welled up in Ruby’s eyes as she saw Sylvia like this, her body trembling with sobs.
Seeing this, Byron shielded Ruby’s eyes. “Step on it,” he barked at the driver.
Byron paced outside the emergency room, barely holding it together. After a few seconds, he stepped aside and dialed a number. It was one friends overseas–he was hoping to find something to flush the toxins out of Sylvia’s system.
Sylvia was rushed into the emergency room. Although the doctors quickly determined it was an allergic reaction, they were at a complete loss as to how
to treat her.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Blair. There aren’t any effective treatment options available at the moment,” came the doctor’s helpless voice through the phone.
Byron watched the doctors rushing in and out of the room. His chest felt tight, like someone had clamped a fist around his lungs and refused to let go. A terrifying thought echoed in his mind, ‘Sylvia… she’s dying.‘
“Mr. Blair,” the doctor continued, “I’ve actually had a theory for a while. Ms. Sullivan became highly allergic because she once tested poisons to find an antidote for you.
“I mean, you were both exposed to the same toxin. The only difference is, your blood built up immunity over time.”
Byron narrowed his eyes as he processed that. The longer he stood there, the clearer his decision became. Then he walked straight into the ER, thinking, ‘She saved me back then. Now it’s my turn.‘
