Chapter 16
Donna paced the living room, her heels
tapping loudly against the marble floor as
she recounted everything that had happened
at the boutique earlier that day.
“I’m telling you, Tania—your mother had the
nerve to strut into my designer’s boutique
and act like she owned the place! She even
brought her new fiancé–some rich guy, and
the staff were bowing to her like she was
royalty!”

Tania, seated stiffly on the couch, looked
away. “I saw him too…”
Donna stopped mid–rant and turned sharply.
“What?”
“I saw them together,” Tania admitted, her
voice quiet. “At a restaurant. She looked
different. Stronger. She… she was laughing
with him. And smiling. It wasn’t fake. She
looked like she meant it.’
Donna’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t be fooled.
That’s part of her act.”

“No,” Tania shook her head slowly. “It didn’t
look like an act. She looked… happy.”

Donna clenched her fists. “Well, she
shouldn’t be happy. After what she did to us?
Leaving your father–cheating on him—
abandoning this family? No. No, she doesn’t
get to walk away and find joy. She doesn’t
deserve it.”
“But what if…” Tania hesitated. “What if she
didn’t do any of that?”

Donna’s voice rose. “Don’t you start
questioning things now. We’ve come too far.
Your mother is a liar, Tania. And if she’s
marrying some rich guy, it’s just for power.
She never loved your father the way I do.
You’ll see. She’ll ruin this new man too.”
Tania bit her lip but didn’t respond. There was
a weight in her chest she couldn’t shake-
something between regret and guilt.
And then a third voice pierced the room.
“What are you two talking about?”

Both women turned.
Jackson stood at the doorway, his face
unreadable, but his voice carried the sharp
edge of suspicion.

“Oh, it’s nothing,” Donna said quickly,
plastering on a smile. “We were just talking
about Trina. Apparently, she’s with someone
now, that’s all.”
Jackson didn’t blink. “Someone? Do you
really think I’d believe that, especially after
what that guy said? He called you out,
Donna He said you manipulated those

photos. That you twisted everything.”
Donna stiffened. “He was lying.”
Jackson’s tone darkened. “No. I think you
were.”

Tania looked between them, conflicted, then
finally spoke up. “She’s getting married.”
Donna’s eyes widened in warning. “Tania-”
But it was too late.

“She’s getting married,” Tania repeated, more
firmly. “To a man named Mateo. I saw them
together. He’s rich. Powerful. She told me to
never show my face to her again after I
confronted her…”
Jackson’s entire body tensed. “Mateo? Mateo
what?”
“Mateo Smith,” Tania replied. “Do you… know
him?”
Jackson staggered back a step, the name
striking him like a bolt of lightning. “Mateo

Smith,” he muttered. “No… it can’t be.”

Donna stepped forward, voice tight. “So what
now, Jackson? You’re going to run to her?
After everything? Even if you go to her, it’s
over. She doesn’t want you anymore. She’s
getting married! She made her choice!”
Jackson turned toward her, eyes blazing with
fury. “And I made mine. I chose you over her.
And now I regret it. Every. Damn. Second.”
Donna’s face paled. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying I’m done!” Jackson roared. “Done
pretending. Done being blind. I lost the only
woman who ever truly loved me because I
was too stupid to see the truth. And now-
now you’re going to feel what she felt!”
Without warning, he grabbed Donna’s wrist
and yanked her toward the hallway.
“Jackson! Have you lost your mind?!” she
shrieked, trying to pull away.
“Yes!” he barked. “I’ve gone insane because I
let you in my head. I let you destroy my

marriage, my family–and her. Now it’s your
turn.”

He shoved her into the bedroom and
slammed the door shut, locking it behind him
as she banged on it from the inside.
“LET ME OUT! YOU CAN’T DO THIS!”
Her screams echoed down the hall, but
Jackson ignored her.
He returned to the living room, his chest
heaving. Tania stared at him, wide–eyed and

pale.
“Dad…” she whispered. “Did we really… do all
that to her?”
He looked at his daughter–his beautiful,
broken daughter–and nodded, his voice
cracking. “We did. We betrayed her. I was so
caught up in my pride and Donna’s lies that I
didn’t even see the truth. Your mother… she
never cheated. She never hurt me. And all
she wanted was to be seen. Loved.
Remembered.”

Tania sank to her knees, tears welling in her
eyes. “I believed everything Aunt Donna
said… I turned against Mom. I was so cruel to
her…”
Jackson knelt beside her, holding her
shoulders. “We were both wrong, Tania. But
it’s not too late. I’m going to get her back.”
Tania shook her head slowly, overwhelmed
with guilt. “But she said she never wanted to
see me again…”
He pulled her into his arms. “She’s hurt. She

Jackson stood, fire returning to his eyes. “I let
her walk away once. I won’t let her walk down
the aisle with someone else without fighting
for her.”
He marched to the door, grabbing his keys.
“Where are you going?” Tania called after
him.

“To stop a wedding,” he growled. “To bring
your mother home.”
Behind him, Donna’s muffled screams
continued through the locked bedroom.
But Jackson no longer heard them.
All he heard now was his own heartbeat
thundering with purpose.

All he saw was her–Trina–in white, walking
down the aisle toward another man.
