As it turned out, the joke was on him.
Rodrick had been scoring over the years!
Britney met Edward’s gaze, but she soon looked away calmly, as if he were a mere stranger.
He frowned, feeling a bit annoyed.
In his eyes, she was just Rodrick’s simp, and he had always looked down on her.
Yet, here she was, acting all aloof!
He knew Randell, so he came over to say hi, deliberately ignoring Britney while he was at it.
“It’s been a while, Mr. Brandt. What have you been up to these days?”
No matter what, Edward was the second son of the Ortega family in Riverton. Though he was a good–for–nothing playboy, with all those connections he had, Randell surely needed to treat him with respect.
“Mr. Ortega, you know what I do for a living. Of course, I’ve been poaching.”
“Poaching?” Edward glanced at Britney meaningfully.
There was a smile playing on Edward’s lips, the mockery it carried undisguised.
“Shouldn’t you spend your time on real talents?”
“Mr. Ortega, where does that come from? Ms. Harrington is highly sought–after in the industry.”
Instead of responding to Randell’s compliment, Edward said, “This may be news to you–Mr. Livingston from Royarch Capital has just recruited a talent from overseas. She’s a Ph.D. from Huffman Business School, previously working at Univa Bank. She’s now the director of Royarch Capital’s Investment Division III.”
He smirked, “She’s definitely a top–tier talent, don’t you think?”
Randell nodded and said truthfully, “She is indeed.”
“So, as I said, you ought to spend your time on real talents.” Edward patted Randell’s shoulder.
Randell wasn’t upset. Instead, he smiled, “Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Ortega.”
After showing off, Edward was in a pretty good mood. “I forgot to mention–I’m an investor in this restaurant. This meal is on me.”
“You don’t have to do this,” Randell waved his hand and said.

“Oh, I insist. Who knows? Perhaps I’ll need your services someday. Consider this a gift.”
Before leaving, Edward glanced at Britney condescendingly.
He expected to see her face flush with shame at feeling inferior.
To his disappointment, there was nothing but calmness.
Not getting what he wanted, he was in a foul mood.
So, upon walking out of the restaurant, he called Rodrick at once.
“Rodrick, guess who I just saw.”

Rodrick was still working late. Too busy to respond to Edward, he pressed the intercom to Secretariat. “Britney, bring me some coffee.”
Edward was stunned for a second.
Rodrick didn’t know Britney wasn’t in the office?
That was interesting.
While waiting for the coffee, Rodrick asked Edward, “Who did you see?”
“Randell,” Edward replied, not entirely telling the truth. “He was poaching someone.”
Just then, someone knocked on Rodrick’s door, and he said, “Come in.”
Then Katheryn entered, bringing him the coffee.
He paused and frowned instinctively. “Where’s Britney?”
Katheryn said, “She’s off work.”
He furrowed his brows even more tightly. “She didn’t work overtime tonight?”
“No.”
Hearing this, he found it weird. But he didn’t dwell on it, simply presuming that she had something else to do. After all, she had always been meticulous about work.
He waved for Katheryn to leave and took a sip of the coffee.
Then he frowned again.
It wasn’t how he liked it.
Losing interest, he put it down on the desk, not intending to pick it up again. Leaning back in his chair, he pinched the bridge of his nose and then asked Edward, “Who was he poaching?”
Finally, he asked the crucial question.

Edward said eagerly, “Britney!”
Edward presumed Rodrick would be so surprised.
