“I was back on October 10th. Why throwing me a party today?” Bianca leaned closer to Rodrick and whispered in his
ear.
He nodded. “Only I saw you that day. Today is for everyone else to meet you. I’m sure it’ll help with your future work.”
October 10th was the day Britney had been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning and a miscarriage.
He had left her in the hospital alone while meeting Bianca at a hotel…
“Ms. Harrington? Are you OK?”
A waiter passing by was startled as he saw Britney crouched on the floor, her face ghastly pale.
Britney asked him to call an ambulance for her.
When she was drenched in cold sweat on the stretcher, Rodrick called.
If it were in the past, she would have answered, no matter how exhausted she was.
But this time, she didn’t.
***
Britney was hospitalized for five days due to severe gastritis.
The doctor said it was because she hadn’t rested properly after that alcohol poisoning and miscarriage.
Rodrick never once reached out.
He didn’t even text her.
Perhaps she had always been disposable to him.
She simply hadn’t realized it before.
On Monday, she went back to work. Right after she arrived at the company, her assistant Katheryn Conner ap- proached her, looking all gossipy, “Britney, have you heard? Someone’s being parachuted into Royarch Capital, A woman, no less!”
“Parachuted in?” Britney frowned, not quite buying it.
Rodrick had always been strict with hiring. Even she had started as a junior intern.
He never did shortcuts.

But Katheryn seemed so certain of it. “It’s true. I saw the appointment Mr. Livingston signed. She’ll be the director of Investment Division III!”
Britney’s heart sank.
It was the position Rodrick had once promised her.
Everyone had witnessed her tireless dedication to Royarch Capital over the years.
According to normal standards, she should have been promoted to director and handled projects independently long
ago.
But Rodrick had said he was used to having her as his secretary. So, she had stayed in Secretariat till now.
He had promised her he’d keep that position open for her.
Once Royarch Capital went public, he’d sign the appointment himself.
“Really?” Britney had a bad feeling. Then she asked, maintaining composure, “What’s her name?”
“Bianca something, I think…” Katheryn didn’t remember the name clearly. She had only glanced at the appointment.
Britney’s hand shook, and the glass in her hand slipped, scalding water splashing everywhere.
Katheryn was startled. “Gosh! Britney, are you OK?”
“Yes,” Britney replied.
But it was a lie–the heartbreak was so overwhelming that she couldn’t even breathe.
“Bianca Webster,” she murmured.
“What?” Katheryn failed to react.
Taking a deep breath, Britney explained, “The new director of Investment Division III–her name is Bianca Webster.”
“Yeah, that’s right! That’s the name! Britney, you know her?”
“No.”
Britney went to fetch another glass of water.
The news soon spread across the company, and many people came to ask her if it was true.
Her patience was wearing thin. Too tired to deal with them anymore, she finally snapped, “If you’re that curious, why not ask Mr. Livingston yourself?”
The entire Secretariat fell silent for a few seconds. Then, a woman’s gentle voice rang out.
“Rod, you’ve got some cranky employees, huh?”
Britney looked over, and the sight of Rodrick and Bianca stung her eyes.

Days had passed since they last met, yet Rodrick only gave her a cold glance.
Then he introduced Bianca to everyone, “Everyone, this is Bianca Webster. She’ll be the new director of Investment Division III. She’ll be overseeing all projects from now on.”
