Eliot put down the bowl with fish food, clapped his hands, and then picked up some palmier cookies and ate two.
When I was about to eat the third piece, Britney took it away.
He glared at her.
Britney smiled along and said, “Watch your blood sugar, save the rest for tomorrow. I’ll have Eve keep it for you.”
Eliot snorted and then asked Britney, “How is he?”
Britney knew he was asking about Rodrick.
Britney smiled and said, “Pretty good.”
The spring breeze was feeling pretty good.
After all, having both love and career go well, how could it not be good?
“And you?” Eliot asked again.
Britney paused for a second, like she wasn’t really used to Eliot’s sudden concern.
But she still answered politely, “I’m pretty good too.”
“You were twenty–eight this year, right?” Eliot started throwing fish food into the pond again.
It really was a rich family, even their koi were chubby and round.

Britney was trying to figure out what he meant in her mind.

I hadn’t figured it out yet when Eliot spoke again, “You’re not that young anymore, it’s time to move on to the next stage of life.”
Those words made Britney’s heart clench, and her emotions were suddenly pulled in two.
