Turned out Rodrick could bend the rules–just not for her.
Because he never loved her.
After Britney distributed the meeting materials, she turned around and saw Bianca already seated.
She sat in Britney’s usual spot.
Britney was stunned for a second and then wanted to remind her.
Yet Rodrick said, “Britney, you’ll sit over there from now on.”
Bianca smiled at her, looking a bit embarrassed, “I’m new here and have a lot to learn. Sitting next to Rod makes things easier.”
With Rodrick already giving the order, there was nothing Britney could say.
With her laptop and documents in her arms, she went and sat in the corner in silence.
No one else dared to make a sound, but the pity in their gazes falling upon her was palpable.
Their pity stung her pride so much, making her desperate to get away.
Halfway through the meeting, Rodrick voiced concerns about one of the projects.
“Why hasn’t this project been implemented yet? Who’s in charge?”
His tone turned stern, a clear sign of his fury.
The meeting room fell dead silent.
Just as the tension was about to erupt, Britney stood up. “I am.”
Rodrick glanced at her coldly, his tone razor–sharp. “Give me a reason.‘
“I’m sorry, Mr. Livingston. I was sick a few days ago, and the progress was delayed…”

He interrupted her before she could finish, “That doesn’t make this excusable. Haven’t I said it before? No one gets to affect work progress due to personal matters. This is the rule.”
After a moment of silence, she said, “I’ll catch up on the progress.”
Only then did he nod.
Before the meeting ended, Rodrick announced that there’d be a welcome party for Bianca at Celestia Club tonight.

As the most upscale nightclub in Riverton, Celestia Club set the standard for luxury, maintaining an average expendi- ture exceeding five figures per evening.
Such a grand gesture was enough to show how much he valued Bianca.
After the employees realized this, the way they looked at Bianca changed subtly.
Even Katheryn, who was usually simple–minded, noticed something different.
She whispered when helping Britney clean up the meeting room, “Britney, are you OK?”
She was one of the few who knew about Britney’s relationship with Rodrick.
Britney said calmly, “Yeah.”
“But you look pale…” Katheryn was very worried.
Hearing this, Britney touched her face. “A lot?”
Katheryn nodded hard. “A lot.”
“My stomach hurts. You know it’s an old issue,” Britney blurted out the first excuse coming to her mind.
“Then are you going to the welcome party tonight?” Katheryn asked.
After some thought, she said, “Maybe not. Could you tell Mr. Livingston I’m sorry?”
Rodrick invited everyone to the party. Presumably, her presence wouldn’t make a difference.
Perhaps he wouldn’t even think of her now.
It made no difference whether she showed up or not.
“Sure. Get some rest, alright? Nothing is as important as your health,” Katheryn reminded her gently.
Even Katheryn could tell she wasn’t herself.
Yet Rodrick, who had been intimate with her in every way, failed to see it.
In the past, she could deceive herself, convincing herself that he was too occupied with work and overlooked those details.
But she didn’t think she could continue to lie to herself anymore.
To make things worse, her stomach started to ache again.
However, crushed under her workload, she could only take a painkiller to ease the pain.
Finally, it was time to get out of work. Upon arriving home, she collapsed into bed, too tired to move her fingers.
She was so worn out–both physically and mentally.
