Edward, on the contrary, felt a surge of uneasiness, feeling he had gone too far.
Just as he wanted to explain, Rodrick said coldly, “You kept us waiting. How about three shots to make things right?”
Britney’s stomach instantly lurched, waves of pain twisting through her.
For a second, she could barely stand.
Hearing Rodrick’s request, Katheryn grew anxious.
“No. Britney’s not feeling well. She shouldn’t drink.”
Katheryn had been with Britney at the business dinner where she got alcohol poisoning.
Witnessing the whole thing, Katheryn still had a lingering fear even to this day.
The doctor had said that Britney might not have made it if she had been sent to the hospital any later.
Edward frowned at Katheryn’s words. “You’re underestimating Britney. Everyone knows she holds her liquor well, OK? Remember that time she went on a business trip with Rodrick for a project up north? There were twenty men at the table, and she outdrank every single one of them. And now, she can’t even handle three shots? Why? Just because it’s a welcome party for Bianca? Is she deliberately targeting Bianca?”
Not wanting the atmosphere to turn awkward, Bianca said, smoothing things over, “Edward, come on. Don’t be so hard on Britney.”
Edward said in a huff, “I’m not being hard on her!”
Then he turned to Rodrick for backup. “Rodrick, am I being hard on Britney?”
Rodrick lifted his head, his unreadable gaze sweeping across Britney’s face. Then he said, curving his lips icily, “No.”
His confirmation made Edward even more confident. “See? Even Rodrick agrees with me. Bianca, you’re too kind- hearted. Unlike you, Britney is a crafty old hand at business, and she knows better than anyone how to turn things to her advantage.”
Britney didn’t say anything to respond to Edward’s put–downs.
Instead, she just stared at Rodrick intently, wanting to see if there was something hidden in there.
She was waiting for him to say something–anything–even just “Forget it” or “Cut it out“.
It was her one last desperate struggle before falling into complete despair.
But Rodrick didn’t say anything.

Chapter 6
There was nothing but indifference in his eyes.
At that moment, Britney suddenly realized something.

It was like someone poured a bucket of ice water down her back, putting out the last shred of hope she had been clinging to.
She smiled, feeling a bit dazed, and bent over to pick up the shot glass. Then she said calmly, “I’m sorry for being late. I’ll drink.”
She had picked up a lot of drinking tricks from all those business dinners over the years.
For example, it was always useful to eat something before drinking, have some milk or yoghurt, or drink slowly.
She had dominated all those business dinners all thanks to these tricks.
But this time, she didn’t use any tricks at all.
She just downed the shots, plain and simple.
One shot.
Two shots.
Three shots.
The harsh liquor stung her nose, and her stomach ached even more.
But all she did was raise the empty shot glass at Rodrick and say casually, “Done. Can I go now, Mr. Livingston?”

Britney didn’t know whether Mr. Livingston nodded or not.
Because she had already turned to leave after asking him.
Her stomach was churning so violently that she might puke at any second.
As she hunched over the toilet, vomiting violently, she was so glad that she had taken stomach medicine before drink- ing.
No one was born with a high alcohol tolerance.
She used to be a teetotaler before joining Royarch Capital.
