Chapter 7

Christopher’s anger instantly dissipated. He stood frozen in place, his body trembling slightly.
I nuzzled against his solid back affectionately. “Once I finish dealing with things outside, I’ll come back and live with you.”
Christopher let out a cold laugh, mocking himself. “You were just lying to me. You still want to go find that bastard! I knew you wouldn’t suddenly change your mind. You clearly despise me so much…”
Unable to bear it any longer, I stood on my tiptoes and kissed his lips gently.
Christopher said in horror, “This is impossible!”
He froze, showing an expression of disbelief.
I told him irritably, “The compensation money you gave me was stolen. I need to get it back!”
Christopher wrapped his arms around my waist and asked, “Did you eat the bug?”
I nodded.
Christopher asked again, “Are you still afraid of me?”

Seeing his disappointed expression, I explained regretfully, “I am a little afraid of you, but I’ll work hard to overcome it!”
Christopher asked suspiciously, “Do you want to stay by my side?”
I nodded. “Yes!”
I was telling the truth. After eating the bug, I couldn’t lie.
When we returned to the town, everyone who saw me looked terrified.
I thought they were just surprised I was still alive, until Sharon
fled frantically from the church archives, holding up a yellowed photograph.
She screamed hysterically, “It’s her! It’s her! She’s the bride who
was offered to the deity a hundred Christmases ago. She’s not
even human!”
Alexander, having caused great trouble, was tied up in the square
as punishment.
He looked at me in terror. “Impossible! How could she be over a hundred years old? This can’t be real!”
Tom was the first to react, leading the others in bowing to me
“Please calm your anger! We beg you to intercede with the great 2/7
deity and spare our lives! We’re willing to sacrifice those who

Sharon was tied up behind Alexander, screaming.

Alexander snapped out of his shock and looked at me with a complex expression. “You clearly loved me so much those two Christmases. You wouldn’t have the heart to kill me, right?”
Sharon cursed viciously, “You dared to covet the deity’s woman. You’ll die more miserably than I will!”
Then she turned to me, pleading, “Charlotte, this was all Alexander’s idea. I’ll give you all the money back. Please spare
me!”
Of course I wanted that money back. It was the compensation
Christopher had given me.
I pretended to glance at Alexander casually, then said to Tom with apparent regret, “Let them go. But from now on, the deity will no longer protect any of you.”
I left the town with a cold snake deity curled up in my arms.
I had originally planned to stay, but Christopher said he wanted to
see the outside world.
Perfect timing–I wasn’t suited for mountain life anyway.
I truly wanted to be with Christopher, but I refused to eat bugs.

out and told me, “Your lover is dead.”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t say that! I had nothing to do with him.”
Alexander was dead, Sharon was dead, and everyone in the town would die.
I wasn’t magnanimous–I always repaid grudges–but sometimes I didn’t want to take revenge personally.
Alexander believed he lost me and missed out on a beautiful life because of Sharon, so he killed her.
With Sharon dead, Alexander couldn’t escape either.
He became the town’s criminal while also harboring hatred for the
townspeople.
Alexander went mad with a knife, attacking anyone he saw.
He had originally gotten into college and escaped that small town. What destroyed him was himself.
The townspeople captured Alexander and tried to use him as a
sacrifice to appease Christopher’s anger.
But that night, torrential rain began, and the group heading up the
mountain encountered a landslide.
The townspeople abandoned the bound Alexander and scatt
to save themselves.

Watching the raging mudslide, Alexander was buried in despair.

Not a single townsperson managed to escape.
That small town, which had prayed for divine protection since ancient times, disappeared forever beneath the mud and sand.
Above the ruins, only half of a dilapidated church remained visible.
Though mud is filth, it cleansed a piece of this world’s corruption.
I brought Christopher back to my villa.
This was the villa I’d bought with the compensation money he gave me.
Christopher said displeasedly, “You spent my money all these Christmases, dating other men. You must have been very happy!”
I told the truth: “I was indeed very happy.”
Christopher was furious.
I held Christopher down and stammered fearfully, telling the truth:
“But now I only want to be with you.”
Christopher became shy.
I pressed on relentlessly with a question: “I only have one
question. Since you’re a snake deity, will I lay eggs in the future?”

Christopher said tremblingly, “Let’s try and see!”

Epilogue:
Christopher held two eggs, overjoyed.
He had waited many Christmases for that girl who once saved him to come up the mountain.
But she had suddenly become afraid of snakes, insects, and rodents, refusing to stay no matter what, so he could only reluctantly let her leave with the compensation money he gave her.
Christopher also worried that Charlotte wasn’t living well, so he blessed her with good luck and longevity, claiming it was punishment for running away from marriage.
Actually, he didn’t like those people sending him women–he only liked Charlotte.
After discovering Charlotte had found a boyfriend, Christopher returned to the mountain, vowing never to see her again.
But that day, she appeared in his church, covered in wounds.
Christopher was furious!
The good news was that Charlotte, who could only tell the truth
after eating the bug, said she wanted to stay.
Although she was still very afraid of snakes and had forgotten 6/7

snakes weren’t scary at all.
However, even after having two little ones, Charlotte still couldn’t
fully adapt to sleeping in the same bed as a snake.
Every winter, Christopher had to sleep on the couch.
Christopher slept on the couch holding his babies, looking at the moon and thinking of Charlotte.
He wanted to sleep with Charlotte.
