Chapter 11
The reason he’d been so attentive to Mila lately was partly to make up for his youthful regrets, and partly because he believed she was dying.
After all, she had been his long time crush, and if not for her, he might have died in that fire years ago. With these complicated emotions, he had catered to her every whim, wanting her to be happy in what he thought were her final days.
But now, that reason was gone.
Suddenly, he found himself unsure how to relate to her.
Yes, she had been his ideal–his unattainable fove.
But time is a terrifying thing. Even the deepest feelings can fade with its passing.
Besides, he now had Aria in his life.
For some reason, he suddenly felt an urgent need to see her.
Come to think of it, since Mila’s return, he hadn’t really had a proper conversation with Aria.
In the past, Aria had always put him first. Even when not by his side, she would constantly text him.
But now, her profile picture hadn’t lit up in what seemed like forever.
Realizing this, Knox suddenly felt a powerful wave of unease wash over him.
So when exactly had she begun to grow so silent?
Meanwhile, Mila continued speaking.
“Knox, I know you’re still upset with me. That’s okay–I’ll wait for you! I’ll wait until you’re ready to come back to
me.”
Her eyes were earnest, filled with sincerity.
But Knox was distracted, his mind full of Aria–specifically, the look in her eyes yesterday at the hospital–empty and desperate, and when she looked at him, it was as if she were looking at a complete stranger.
Ignoring Mila’s tearful pleas, Knox hurried back to the home he shared with Aria.
Seeing the lights on in the living room, Knox’s heart leapt with hope, thinking Aria had returned. The knot of anxiety in his chest finally loosened.

Knox felt he had so much to say to her, but when he pushed open the door, the person sitting in the living room wasn’t who he expected, but was his father.
Dominic Rivera sat dressed in black, his features stern, his presence intimidating.
Seeing Knox enter, he gave him only a passing glance, his tone neutral.
“So you finally decided to come home.”
Knox didn’t respond, just glanced around the room, searching for Aria. But unfortunately, she wasn’t there.
Just as he was about to speak, Dominic tossed something at him.
Knox instinctively caught it, and when he brought it close to examine, he discovered it was a divorce certificate.
The unease in his heart surged again. He clenched his fists, taking a full half minute before he could bring himself to open it with trembling hands.
It was indeed his and Aria’s.
Knox instantly lost all composure. Red–eyed, he glared at his father on the sofa.
“What is this supposed to mean?”
He shook with rage. “You forced Aria to divorce me?”
Dominic ignored his son’s wild–eyed fury and calmly stated, “Since you two are done, just accept reality. The engagement party with the Harrison girl is in a month. I expect you to attend.”
With that, he stood to leave.
To his surprise, Knox tore the divorce certificate to shreds like a madman, roaring through gritted teeth: “Dream on! I’d rather die than get engaged to someone else!”
He seemed driven to the edge, his eyes even growing moist.
“Dad! Why? Why is it after all these years, you still don’t want me and Aria together? She’s nearly died for you multiple times trying to earn your approval!”
“Why, even after everything she’s done for me, do you still force her to divorce me?”
“Force her?” Dominic’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
“Who said I forced her? She signed the divorce papers willingly.”
But Knox shouted, “Bullshit! You think I’d believe that?”
“Aria loves me too much to ever divorce me!”

Hearing this, Dominic laughed softly.
“My precious son, that woman did love you–that’s true. But think about what you’ve done recently. She’s only human, not a saint. When disappointment accumulates enough, the heart grows cold.”
With that, he pushed his phone across the table.
“I knew you’d react this way, so I came prepared.”
Knox stared blankly at the phone.
In the video, Aria’s expression was resolute as she signed the divorce papers without a moment’s hesitation–no wavering, just absolute finality.
‘No… it can’t be! You forced her–you must have forced her to divorce me!”
Seeing this, Dominic could only shake his head in exasperation.
‘The video is right here in front of you. Do you think I held her hand and made her write her signature? Knox, why keep deceiving yourself at this point?”
“This time, she means it.”
3ut Knox still refused to accept reality, stumbling toward the door.
‘I don’t believe it! I need to find her and get the truth!”
Dominic grabbed his wrist, sighing.
‘Don’t bother looking. You’ll never see her again.”
Because… she’s dead.”
