Chapter 9
“That’s impossible. Her mother’s condition was stabilized. How could she suddenly…”
As Knox spoke, he suddenly recalled Aria’s appearance at the hospital yesterday. Looking back, she had seemed abnormal–deathly pale, as if she’d lost her soul.
The housekeeper continued, “The condition was stable, that’s true, but with illness, who can ever be certain?”
At this point, the housekeeper raised his head, giving Knox a complicated look.
“I heard from the hospital staff that there might have been a chance to save her, but the surgeon who could have performed the operation disappeared about twenty days ago.”
“Sir, that surgeon was the woman who died in the underground chamber that day…”
Hearing this, Knox’s anger evaporated completely. His face paled as he murmured, “So I was the one who
extinguished her mother’s last hope of survival…”
And yesterday at the hospital, he had actually threatened her using her mother.
Knox stood in stunned silence: She must hate him now.
Well, he would let the Mila incident slide.
After all, her mother’s death was partly his fault. Then he’d find a way to apologize to her.
Aria loved him so much–surely she wouldn’t hold it against him.
Though her mother was gone, at least she still had him. Once this situation with Mila was resolved, he’d dedicate the rest of his life to making it up to her.
Mila’s injuries were so severe that doctors worked through the night to barely save her life.
Though she survived, her legs were permanently damaged–she would never walk again.
When Mila regained consciousness and learned this news, she immediately fainted again.
When she awoke the next evening, she wept hysterically. “Knox! Aria did this to me! You must avenge me! She’s ruined my entire life!”
The scene from yesterday still horrified her.
She had been sleeping peacefully in the hospital when someone knocked her unconscious.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in an abandoned warehouse.

Aria stood over her, her eyes colder than Mila had ever seen them. She still clutched the box she’d been holding at the hospital earlier.
“Do you know what this is?” she had suddenly asked.
Terrified, Mila could only shake her head.
“My mother’s ashes.” Aria said.
“My mother is dead.”
As she spoke, she slowly crouched down in front of her:
“You bear significant responsibility.”
She pressed her stiletto heel against Mila’s face, frightening her so badly she could barely speak.
“N–no… it’s not my fault. Aria, 1–let me go, or Knox will never forgive you!”
To her surprise, Aria responded with a cold, chilling laugh. She ground her heel into Mila’s face repeatedly, her
voice as cold as death itself.
“I don’t know what he’ll do to me, but Mila, can you guess what I’m going to do to you?”
The words had barely left her lips when a sharp gunshot suddenly rang out.
Before Mila could recover from the shock, excruciating pain tore through her leg, making her scream.
“I wasn’t planning to bother with a bitch like you, but you kept pushing your luck. So now I’ll give you what you
want.”
“Since you love pretending to be sick, I’ll make sure you never leave your bed again. How does that sound?”
What happened next, Mila couldn’t bear to remember.
She trembled as she clutched Knox’s sleeve.
‘Knox… you have to avenge me!”
Yet to her surprise, Knox didn’t immediately agree this time.
‘Mila, things have gone this far… perhaps we should let it go. Aria…”
Mila was stunned.
“Knox, what are you saying? Aria has crippled me, and you’re going to do nothing?”
Knox sighed, looking at her with reluctance but still not relenting.

“Mila, you just woke up–don’t get yourself worked up. Your injuries are severe, and surgery is scheduled for
tomorrow. I’ve specially arranged for top specialists to examine you first. Let’s get a complete checkup. Your legs are important, but not as important as your life, right?”
Hearing this, Mila’s expression suddenly changed.
“No! I know my own body! No examination–just do the surgery tomorrow!”
She had paid off her current doctor. If someone else examined her, how could she keep up her illness charade?
But Knox was too worried to indulge her wishes. He immediately had someone administer a sedative to Mila and
sent her for examination.
