Chapter 1
On our tenth anniversary, my husband texted me from out of town.
“Let’s get a divorce.”
I picked up my phone and calmly replied, “Okay.”
Two days later, I came home from work.
His assistant sat on my couch, disheveled, tears rolling down her face.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I’m so sorry.”
“I shouldn’t have taken Mr. Nathan’s phone as a prank.”
“I had no idea that number was yours.”
Nathan handed me a piece of paper, speaking softly, coaxing.
Then, turning to me, he said,
“Zoe just graduated. She’s young, made a mistake.”
“She’s been crying her eyes out.”
“You should be more understanding.”
“Let’s just move past this.”
I looked into his determined eyes and laughed.
Move past this?
I already hired a divorce lawyer.
I kept my expression neutral as I watched Nathan Whitmore carefully wipe away her tears, his hand steadying her lower back.
She looked too weak to stand, practically melting into his arms.
Zoe’s sly glances tested Nathan’s patience, but she made sure to play the innocent victim.
“Mr. Nathan, you just got back.”
“Two days ago, it was your anniversary with Madison.”
“Please, don’t let me be the reason you fight.”

“She looks so upset.”
Nathan’s face softened.
He stole a glance at me.
“It’s late. You shouldn’t go home alone.”
“The car’s outside–I’ll take you.”
Then he turned to me with a sigh.
“This is my fault.”
“I spoiled you too much, made you reckless.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll deal with you when I get back.”
Oh, so now I’m the one at fault?
I bit back the urge to slap both of them.
I still remember how Nathan used to ignore clingy girls back in college, turning them down without hesitation–he even shut down the campus queen.
But now?
I smiled.
“Go ahead, take her home.”
“You might as well stay over–it’ll make commuting to work easier in the morning.”
Zoe blushed, hiding her face against Nathan’s chest as if embarrassed.
Nathan’s expression darkened.
“Madison, stop talking nonsense.”
“Zoe and I are strictly professional.”
I glanced at his hand resting on her lower back.
“Right, an assistant.”
“Always at your service–whether it’s for work or… other things.”
I sniffed, swallowing my tears.
Keeping my voice icy, I said,

Chapter 1
“If you two don’t leave now, should I drive you myself?”
Then I sneered, “Or maybe we should all live together?”
“I can help take care of the baby when she’s pregnant.”
Zoe shivered, her big, tearful eyes looking up at Nathan.
“Mr. Nathan, I swear I never meant to upset your wife.”
“I won’t bother you two anymore.”
She fled, weeping dramatically.
Nathan shot me a glare before running after her without a second thought.
Ten years together.
Three years of marriage.
And he didn’t even offer me an explanation.
