Chapter 6
“That would be amazing!”
Her tone was all fake innocence, probing for an answer.
I kept my voice cold.
“I’m here with my bestie.”
“Do I owe you a report on my every move?”
I had no patience for her, but before I could leave, Nathan appeared out of nowhere, carrying a bag full of
prescriptions.
He looked like he had something to say, but Zoe beat him to it.
She practically melted against him, her voice dripping with saccharine sweetness.
“Madison, don’t be mad at Nathan.”
“It’s my fault—I’ve been feeling so nauseous lately.”
Her eyes glistened with fake tears.
“I know I shouldn’t ask another woman’s husband for help, but I was scared to come to the hospital alone.”
She was playing the victim perfectly, and if I hadn’t known better, I might’ve believed her act.
Nathan glanced at Zoe, then turned to me.
“Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t feeling well?”
“Since when did we start keeping secrets?”
The years I’d spent with him had cost me more than I realized–my friends, my independence.
The only person who truly understood me was standing right in front of me.
“The hospitals here aren’t great.”
“Let me see your diagnosis.”
“I’ll get a top specialist from out of town.”
He reached for my bag.
Disgust flashed through me, and I jerked away.

Chapter 6
“Don’t bother. I’ve got a meeting. Move.”
I walked past him, but he stepped in my way.
“You look like hell. I’ll have my driver take you to a better hospital.”
Before he could grab my wrist, Zoe suddenly clutched her stomach and crouched down, her face twisted in
discomfort.
“Nathan, don’t worry about me. I just feel a little sick. Nothing serious.”
She looked up at him, eyes brimming with unshed tears.
Nathan hesitated, his hand halfway to mine.
Then, he turned away.
“Madison, I’ll have the driver take you.”
“Call me if you need anything.”
With that, he strode over to Zoe, helped her up, and walked away without a second glance.
I clenched my jaw as my vision blurred.
Maybe I really wasn’t important anymore.
For one moment, I’d considered keeping the baby.
But for what?
To bring them into a broken home, where their father would choose another woman over and over again?
I stepped into the elevator, my mind racing with foolish hope.
Maybe just maybe–he would turn around.
But when I reached the doctor’s office, I saw him and Zoe.
Kissing.
And with that, every last shred of hesitation disappeared.
Lying on the operating table, I felt the anesthesia seep into my veins.
The surgical lights above blurred.
Ten weeks.
That was all it took.

Chapter 6
It was over before I even realized.
“Remember, take it easy this month.”
“No cold food, and don’t catch a chill…”
The nurse’s voice droned on as I watched the woman in the next bed.
Her husband was carefully cooling a bowl of soup, spoon–feeding her with the gentlest care.
My eyes stung. Once upon a time, I had that too.
I refused to stay overnight.
Clutching my medication, I drove home.
A home that was now just mine.
No Nathan. No Zoe.
Just me.
