Chapter 2
Diana feigned reproach: “Caleb, you can’t call him that!”
She turned apologetically to Conrad. “I’m sorry, he doesn’t understand.”
Conrad glanced at Sonia with an expressionless face, then effortlessly lifted the boy. “It’s fine.”
“I like you. I wish you were my real daddy!”
Caleb Eaton quickly wrapped his arms tightly around Conrad’s neck, as if afraid he’d be punished
for being too slow.
After saying this, he glanced nervously at Diana before adding: “Daddy, can you stay with me and
Mommy tonight? I don’t want to be apart from you.”
Diana shook her head helplessly, her loving smile tinged with artifice.
“Conrad, don’t listen to him. “He’s too clingy…”
Conrad: “It’s no problem. I’m free tonight anyway.”
Diana’s smile grew even sweeter.
A numb, dull ache spread through Sonia’s chest.
The resemblance was uncanny.
When Conrad held that little boy, it was like holding a miniature version of himself.
If her child were still alive, would he look just like this?
Sonia decided not to dwell on it.
She was leaving soon anyway.
Maybe this was for the best.

Chapter 2
Fighting back the pain, she walked past them and stepped into the elevator.
Sonia didn’t announce her upcoming position at the NSA. She simply submitted her resignation to
the company leadership.
Knowing she had been treated unfairly at the company, her supervisor readily signed the paperwork and promised to keep it confidential.
She didn’t tell Conrad either, because she saw no point.
He wouldn’t care anyway.
Her car pulled up to the entrance of Fairfax Manor. She pressed the doorbell.
Soon, the housekeeper Mary Cooper came to answer. “Miss. Fairfax, you’re back.”
“Is Mrs. Fairfax home?”
“Yes, she’s inside. Please come in.” Mary received Sonia with utmost respect.
Conrad’s grandmother, Victoria Fairfax, was a revered elder in the Fairfax family.
Born into a powerful and influential family, she had married into the Fairfax clan and initially took over part of the business. She expanded it steadily until she became one of New York’s most formidable businesswomen–someone who could move mountains with a single word.
Even though Conrad’s mother disliked Sonia, she wouldn’t dare oppose her in Victoria’s presence.
Linda led Sonia to a meditation room where Victoria knelt on a cushion, praying.
‘Mrs. Fairfax, Miss. Fairfax is here.”
Victoria slowly opened her eyes. “Come sit.”
After Linda left, Sonia knelt beside Victoria and bowed reverently to the statue.
Victoria was deeply religious and attended service regularly.

“Mrs. Fairfax,” Sonia began, “I want to divorce Conrad.”
